Must be an extra cost option I've never opted for when going with USPS.

you can use delivery confirmation or add insurance... that's a way to track them.

I have found that, by shopping around, you can find a FFL that won't gouge you. The gun stores tend to gouge on recieved guns because they resent you not buying from them. My FFL is a business man who owns a Radio Shack and a jewelry store that share a building. He does not have a gun store, nor does he sell guns. He just does the FFL thing as an extra source of income, sort of like being a notary public. He charges $20 to recieve a gun. Nice guy.

I ran into the same issue. I had to return a 1911 for work at Colt and return a Kahr. I figured shipping wouldn't be too much, so I declined Kahr's offer of a shipping tag. (stupid)

I stood in line at Fedex, filled out forms, were told they were wrong, filled out more, taped and boxed everything, got the insurance and finally got back in line and was advised "that will be $170.00"

I was too embarassed and tired to walk. Later my gunshop told me they do it on the cheap and it would have cost him 20 bucks, probably less.

Have your seller Drop the gun off at a shop and have them ship.

that stinks, pistol was already shipped by the seller.. I mentioned that to them and they chose that route. That was their choice not mine so if I were in their shoes I would of walked out and made contact with the buyer... Me and said hey I will return the funds or if you can send more money I will ship it your call. I would of been a tad pissed since I went through the hassle of sending everything but then again I refuse to pay more than what I agreed to because the lack of knowlege of the best way to ship a gun without putting a morgage on it!

So what's the problem? You paid what was agreed and the gun is on the way to you. Just matter of factly tell the seller that is all you are going to pay him. End of story.

I know you have enough info and all, but you opened Pandora's box and there's no going back now. The replies are gonna keep flooding in.

Not long ago I ordered a motorcycle seat on eBay. Seller contacted me a couple days later saying the shipping was more than they expected, and asking if I would split the difference with them.

My initial response was to play "dumb buyer" and told them I didn't understand why I needed to pay more than the price + shipping that was posted in the auction.

They explained that they'd never shipped anything that big before and had underestimated the cost. They also said they'd gone ahead and shipped the thing anyway and it was my choice on whether I'd be willing to help them out or not.

I waited for the thing to arrive, inspected it, and found that it was exactly as advertised, in perfect condition, and exactly what I needed. So I split the shipping cost with them and sent a little more money. It didn't break my bank to do so, they were very appreciate, and everyone was still smiling at the end of the transaction.

But if anything had been wrong and undisclosed about the item, or if their attitude had been different, or the amount was significantly more, the outcome would have been very different.

I'd be slightly annoyed with this guy for not asking me before paying more for shipping and then expecting me to cover it. I'd be somewhat inclined to let him swing. But on the other hand, if the gun arrived, I loved it, and I felt that it was worth a little extra money to promote goodwill among my fellow earthlings, then maybe I'd toss him a few bucks extra - not the entire additional cost, but enough to take the sting out of it.
