I served aboard the USS Carl Vinson. We always keep 11 in service and one ready to go. I can tell you the crews of the Constellation, JFK, and now the Kitty Hawk were sad to see them go but at the same time sort of relieved, like a sick relative whose time has come... A bittersweet feeling but we always have new ones on the way. The Big E's time is certainly near too...

Hands-off automatic carrier landing systems have been around a long time, but not every aircraft is equipped with it. Some pilots like it, some don't. It's actually a fairly simple and elegant system to maintain...

We have the Yorktown (cv-10) in Charleston harbor as a museum. I'd be more afraid of her than China's funny looking ramp-nosed boat... Maybe in my lifetime they'll buy a real ship, but it'll take a lot longer to learn how to use it

Is it close captioned for the hearing derelicts like me.

I got Act of Valor on CD or DVD or whatever them little silver disc are called and got a lot more out of it seeing the words. It was cooler on screen at the theater but not as good not being able to hear the talk.

I might take a look, I got a small flat screen tv and one of them disc players dealy heimers and I sometimes play a movie while I whittle.
Be nice if I could hear, I could listen to Reba or George Straight and stay awake longer. Nothing worse than waking up with your face in a pile of sawdust. Actually ain't so bad I guess, worse ways to wake up or worse yet NOT waking up.

Bawanna I'm sure it has closed caption being a made for PBS DVD program...Try it out, I saw a couple of the "Carrier" shows on regular PBS TV and was hooked so when I found the DVD set I had to get it....

As MikeG said the Yorktown CV-10 permanent museum in Charlston's Patriot's Point Park is a great place to visit if you are in the area...I was very lucky and was able to spend the weekend touring and sleeping on the ship with my sons Boy Scout Troop twice...First trip we slept in the enlisted mens quarters in 4 high stacked bunks on what I'm pretty sure were the original equipment mattresses and that made for a long night but the second trip we were allowed to sleep in the Officers area and that was way mo betta and I figured out pretty quick that it's good to be an officer...

It took us all weekend to go through that ship and even then I'm sure we missed some of it and since it's a WW II era ship and a modern Super Carrier is about twice the size I can't imagine how they design and build something that big...If you ever get the chance to visit one of the several Carrier museums around the country it makes for a very fun and interesting learning experience and is well worth the time...

I followed your link and found it. It is close captioned. Ill try to order it up tonight.

Might be nice to own a carrier. Be like your own island. If you get tired of the neighborhood you just drive it someplace else you like.
Plenty of room for a shooting range and all the amenities a man could want. Maybe even haul in some dirt on the flight deck so you could mow the lawn, have a garden etc.

Be great to see the banks reaction when I ask for a loan.

I don't think you need gas. You need like enriched uranium or something. Ain't they suppose to run for like years and years without a recharge.

Don't know if the lights and electricity and all that runs on nuclear stuff to or not. Man might glow in the dark being on it for too long.

Definitely need gas for the lawn mower. Mine don't run on that other stuff.

There's this in the pipeline too. Unmanned aerial vehicle for carriers.

The funny thing is we did have our own shooting range, right off elevator 3. If you knew someone sometimes you could have some real fun off the fantail...

I heard once they used to allow trap shooting off the back of cruise ships. I looked hard on that one I was on and all I found was a ping pong table and some kiddie pools.

Maybe you gotta go to some foreign country to do the trap shooting, or maybe they outlawed it cause the lead shot was endangering the seahorses or jelly fish or something.

I imagine it takes quite a spell to find your way around one of the aircraft carriers. Heck that cruise ship I sometimes had to find a window and figure out which way was the front to figure where I needed to find my way home or more often the buffet line.
Saw alot of the same crew all the time and they'd laugh when I'd point and ask front? I was usually wrong but they thought it was funny.

Isn't that kind of what them SEALS did on them pirates. Was that a carrier and they were shooting 50's. Maybe it wasn't a carrier? Back end of some boat I remember that and some fine shooting and rescued the captain.

I think that was an LHD or something, we called them smallboys. Helos only. But I dunno what those guys used that day. For sure some fine shooting though

Oh and once you find your rack, your workcenter, and the galley, you're golden. Just don't accidentally find yourself too far belowdecks, lack of sunlight and the nuclear reactors down there bring out the crazy in some people

                            China

All that chinese stuff we buy feeds the Peoples Army military machine and gives them cash to borrow back to us to get economic leverage.

I have asked this question before. If the U.S.A. and China went to war, which side would the big "Marts" be on?

I know the grammar is poor.

The U.S. is in very sad shape. BOTH political parties, large corporations and consumers who would rather buy cheap stuff than keep Americans employed are to blame.

This and just plain GREED all the way down the line. Everybody want's a 6 figure income, mostly to afford to live above the poverty level.
Most bring it on ourselves. Not a man alive worth a 100,000 a year and we have a dozen at the city making half again or more of that. Some of them women too.
Flipping burgers at McDonalds for 9 or 10 bucks an hour cause the government sets the minimum wage. Insane and I see no way to go backwards.

Sell cars for 5,000, and houses for 100,000 again and maybe people would settle for less dough.
