I watched that whole thing on TV. That man has a chrome moly set of cojones.
When he stood on the platform and saluted, I was puckered up tight. I can't imagine what he was experiencing. Then he dropped off into thin air.
    That was true explorer adventurism.

That notch in the rail is supposed to be there

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
    --Thomas Jefferson (1764).

I bet a 100 million didn't pay the entire bill from the day they started thsi project either. unbelievable allthe technology that went into that entire project. MY hat is off to the entire team. unbelievable and yup no stimulus money was needed either. I am gonna go out and buy a 6 pak of RED BULL..

I was just reading about all of this before I saw this post. Taking these challenges and developing the technology to do it is what makes it all great. Like jocko said no stimulus money required, and I bet the things learned will benefit us all before it's all over.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

I thought it showed speed of 729mph for a short time, then he seemed to hit terminal velocity at that speed... then they didn't show the speed again.

So DID he or DID HE NOT actually break the sound barrier?

Awsome... Compleatly nutts, but awsome just the same.

Met Joe Kittinger many years back after he gave a short talk about the Man high project and Project Excelsior (his own jump) in the middle 1950's. I think the folks back then would laugh at the amount of effort and money put into todays jump. Few folks cared about their efforts back then. The world was into rockets, not ballons, but today we all understand todays incredible effort and risk for an undertaking done mostly about "sport".
My hat is off to them all.
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
                        "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
                        "more stuff than you are"
                        God Bless our Troups!

It was awesome to watch! And so cool the way he landed on his feet, didn't hit the ground and roll or anything.
                          Very interesting...

I can envision..... true astronautic feat of being able to abandon a vehicle, firing personal descent propulsion, and parachuting to safety... in very extreme emergency. There's no real reason it cannot be done, based on today's feat.

He jumped from a slow moving balloon. The astronauts re-enter the atmosphere at a much higher rate of speed. Can you say heat shield? It ain't like hoppin' off a Harley.
