I remember watching that live. I was also lucky enough to be at Cape Kennedy when Apollo 14, Apollo 17, and two shuttle launches occurred. Very impressive. However next only to an atomic detonation I cannot fathom anything louder than a Saturn V rocket launch. Where I was standing it was downright painful.

That was totally cool!! I've always been a big space nut. That "30 seconds" call they had right about at the time of touchdown was 30 seconds of fuel left before they had to hit the big red button and abort the landing attempt.

          Very cool. Thanks.
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

I too remember watching that live, very early in the morning, sitting around a B&W TV. Most of the people I know now were not born then. Of course, I was not born when Pearl Harbor happened, and time marches on.

I listened to it on a tiny transistor radio while at summer camp in scouts. It was totally enthralling then as it is now. Thanks for that link.

That notch in the rail is supposed to be there

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
              --Thomas Jefferson (1764).
