"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
    --Thomas Jefferson (1764).

I don't understand "Not anymore". If it was in the treaty originally, it's still in the treaty. Did Texas relinquish their rights?

Not so much "relinquished". Just backed the wrong side in "The War of Northern Agression".

Seriously, when I was in high school, I was on a school trip to Austin, and we took a tour of the Texas capitol building. In the rotunda, there were several documents on display. One of them was an old document, and the script was kind of funny, but if I read it correctly....this was the resolution, or whatever, that Texas passed when it withdrew from the Union (seceeded) when the Civil War began. Still on display. So while Texas might have once had the technical right to seceed, that horse has left the barn, so to speak.

You know, I totally forgot that the North-South unpleasantness took place after Texas joined the Union. Hummm, that throws a big monkey wrench in the whole secession thing. I guess it would take a better lawyer than me, or at least one with a different focus to figure that one out. Point taken.

BTW, the term "Civil War" is a misnomer since the South had no intention of usurping the government of the United States. They wanted to form a separate entity.

If nothing else it let's the people make a statement!
WE the people don't like the way your running things! Sadly we didn't load up the seats of the old Yankee Stadium with all politicians, prior to imploding the building!
I signed the NJ succession petition. Hell Id sign one to secede from NJ too if they had one, given their anti 2nd amendment rights attitude!

If you're referring to the states comment, while he was campaigning in 2008, Obama said that he had been to 57 states with one more to go. Personally, since he was educated in Indonesia and Hawaii, I doubt that he knew the number of states. Private schools in Hawaii teach Hawaiian history, not American.
