I've bought and sold on eBay for many years, although I'll admit I haven't sold anything in a while. My last batch of sale items... eBay/PayPal netted 26% of the total price in service charges and fees, so I don't really sell anything there any longer. I do, however, still go in there and buy stuff... gun stuff, computer parts, tools and hobby items, postage labels. It is an open marketplace and you have to be aware of who and what you are dealing with. Shipping/handling on an item usually is clearly identified; anymore, I just make it a point to look for items with free shipping, and that solves that.

Not sure if those of you who are unhappy with eBay are typical. According to a recent news story dated January 19, 2012, "Fourth-quarter revenue rose 35 percent to $3.38 billion, EBay said yesterday in a statement."
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...on-paypal.htmlIt would be so nice if something made sense for a change.

Revenue is only up because they are taking such a huge portion of the sales and shipping now.Originally posted by TucsonMTB View PostNot sure if those of you who are unhappy with eBay are typical. Fees have gone crazy in the past two years.
As there piece of the sales pie shrinks due to better deals elsewhere, they will have to adapt or die.All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

I've used eBay for many years, buying and selling, with mostly good results.
The selling fees are high, so I limit my selling to stuff that I came across for next to nothing, so I can still feel happy about what I get for it. I'm an "occasional seller", not one of those guys who makes a living by turning junk around for a few pennies profit.
My buying experience has mostly been good.
Recently, I came across a bad apple and initially got screwed on the purchase of a motorcycle ignition. The description was worded in such a way to give hope to a buyer that it just needed a little cleaning/lube and all would be well. The thing arrived, and it was obvious to me with 15 seconds inspection that someone had jammed a screwdriver into it with a hammer and completely trashed it.
I contacted the seller politely because there had obviously been a mistake, and I was sure he'd just overlooked it. Nope, he was rude, told me to get stuffed. I suggested that I could toss it in the trash for him, so nobody had to pay return shipping, he could keep the money I sent for shipping, and he could just refund the actual item price. In that case, he'd lose nothing, since the item was junk anyway, and I'd only lose the shipping cost. He twisted my words and said I was trying to get a 100% refund and keep the item.
I submitted an "eBay Resolution Center Incident", which gave him time to respond. He responded with more drivel. I "escalated" the incident. 18 hours later eBay granted me a full refund, including shipping, put a bad mark on his seller record (in addition to my negative feedback), and I did not have to send it back (I dropped it in the trash where it belongs).
The guy was a "power seller" and I expected eBay to side with him since he generates more revenue for them, but I was surprised when they did the opposite.
The thing is, it was only a $17 item (plus $6 shipping), and from a monetary perspective, it totally wasn't worth my time to go through all of that hassle to get my $23 back. I only did it because the guy was such an ass when I contacted him. Most people don't fight back that hard, so he will just move on to the next unsuspecting buyer who fails to read his feedback, or believes the crap he writes in replies to negative feedback trying to make the buyer look bad.
Anyway, eBay is like any other auction marketplace. The buyer must choose carefully, and in most cases everything will be OK - but there are scumbags everywhere. eBay is no better or worse than your local flea market or swap meet.-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I didn't either until I had to change my CC number twice over three years because of fraudulent purchases. When I called them I was asked for the old number. Since to account had be set up years before I had no idea what number was used initially. The CS rep said it was impossible to update the account w/o the old number. I tried three different CS reps and a supervisor without success. I finally decided if they didn't want to do business with me, I didn't want to do business with them.Originally posted by Sage View PostI use ebay and PayPal and have never had a problem.

Screwlala!
I got on Groupon a while back. More recently, a copycat called Moolala came along and I got on it, too. I have purchased very little from either one, but recently I purchased and 8 mb MP3 player for $4.64 from Moolala, but when I went to redeem it the seller wanted to tack on a $10 s&h fee. This was not disclosed before I purchased the deal. I contacted Moolala and they apparenty aren't going to do anything about it. So, fair warning: do not do any business with Moolala, or as I like to call them, Screwlala!
Very interesting...
