  • DHS and the border - oops there goes another..

    ...constitutional freedom.

    "
The Department of Homeland Security’s civil rights watchdog has concluded that travelers along the nation’s borders may have their electronics seized and the contents of those devices examined for any reason whatsoever — all in the name of national security.

    ...

According to legal precedent, the Fourth Amendment — the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures — does not apply along the border. By the way, the government contends the Fourth-Amendment-Free Zone stretches 100 miles inland from the nation’s actual border.

Sounds like the DHS is becoming more like the Gestapo by the day.

sweet... I live within 3 miles of the border. I see them stop random people all the time and pull everything out of their car and have dogs go over everything then are nice enough to let them load it back in themselves and leave.

Is this just for border crossings, or is anyone living within 100 miles of the border a target?

Depends on what one considers reasonable. Fair or not, anyone poor looking Latino within a couple miles north of the border ought to consider themselves fair game.

And yet for actual illegal immigrants, it is mostly catch and release rules ordered upon the border patrol agents.

So if I'm totin' my electronic device down the street in San Diego, Laredo, Brownsville, Del Rio, South Padre Island, or El Paso, a DHS agent can grab it and compel me to enter my password so he/she can access all my dumb posts on Kahrtalk?

                        Without a warrant?

Yes, and apparently also on South Beach in Miami Beach, FL - even on the almost all nude part of the beach where it's tougher to hide your electronics.

And, as pointed up above, a 100 mile Fourth Amendment Free Zone from the border means, for FL, there's only a wee bit o land up by GA above and about mid-way along I10 that is not covered - and they got drones for that.

Tougher... maybe... but not impossible. A few guys have gotten weapons into the jail and got through the initial patdown. One fat guy voluntarily surrended his unloaded 9mm, I believe, that was tucked into one of his fat rolls!

Another had a full-sized S&W... 4" barreled .38 where the sun doesn't shine! Cell phones and the like are easy for either sex to hide, though a condom would be advised!
