  • Military to destroy/leave $36 BILLION in equipment in Afghanistan

According to this recent article http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/Afg...#ixzz2Mm9cbQrT
the Obama administration will destroy billions of $'s of equipment rather than spend $5.7 billion to bring it home. I'll bet the Chinese would give is 20 cents on the dollar for it.

Not to argue, but that's not what it says. This is an article detailing 3 possible options for dealing with $36 billion worth of equipment and the cost associated with moving it.

Nowhere is there a statement from anyone stating what the government actually plans on doing.

Have to agree that's not what it says. However it wouldn't suprise me a bit if they did destroy all of it, instead of moving it. It seems to be with this current group of bozo's in washington that everything needs to be destroyed.

Certainly nothing new either. They been dumping brand new surplus stuff for a long time.

Under our current regime it's even more likely.

Now there's a great idea that should take off like the Hindenberg.

They should cut loose with all the surplus Garands, 1911's and M14's etc too. Lots of history setting in warehouses someplace here and abroad.

            I like the M4 idea.

I watch as millions of dollars worth of missiles were given the deep six in the Atlantic Ocean in 1969. They had passed their shelf life and it cost more to rebuild them than it did to replace them. At least that's what we were told.

Funny how stuff to be destroyed somehow reappears in terrorist hands. Reads much like the Russians destroying their nuclear missiles. They may not want to bring it home because they would have to inventory it and come up with all kinds of phoney stuff on where the rest of it is.

As for the money, the purchase and shipping east costs are done and over. The shipping home is new money and Obama will probably say it's the Republicans fault because sequester makes it unaffordable to ship back. But of course we will spend untold billions hunting down the bad guys who end up firing thousands of Made in USA missiles at American buildings in major cities.

The military says this will keep the equipment out of the enemy's hands by destroying it. But the real reason is so the Military Industrial Complex can build another 54 Billion Dollars worth on new stuff to sell back to the military.

During the draw down from Vietnam my uncles watched millions of dollars in aircraft, weapons, deck equipment was dumped of the flight deck of carriers returning home.

What cannot or will not be brought back is normally EOD'd in place. Friends and coworkers who have been there and are there now tell my that the majority of the gear is reaching its service life and in fact much is already broken down to the point it is not cost effective to repair or repatriat it.

For instance virtually all of our aircraft more than 10 years old is way past its service life and the cost to maintain is about to really skyrocket.

I guess it is then time for the susicide pilots to take over to get one more good use out of them planes, like the Japs did in WWII.

Here's an idea that would solve a bunch of problems..................................

Gather all of the stuff that needs to be destroyed in separate areas, then .....................nuke it!

Fighting aircraft are continuous overhauled and upgraded their whole useful lives. There is a point however that the airframe has been beaten by high G combat flying that you can't fix them anymore. Even lesser strained aircraft like the P3 patrol aircraft have been in service 30+ years. We are currently replacing the wings, the tails, powerplants and the whole wiring harness to wring another twenty years out of those airframes. Not cheap to rebuild like that, but saves a ton over starting a new production line.
I have a good buddy that rebuilds Humvees and trucks from overseas. Some of them are just wasted. The crew at that shop perform amazing feats of overhauling. Someone should do a TV show on that shop. Way better than the other local based show on the Gas Monkey...
More of it will come home than you think.
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
                              "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
                              "more stuff than you are"
