  • Seeing as jlottmc probably won't mention it

He is finally finished his process of finding a great department. He finished all the test, the firearms quals, which he said was basically to show they weren't going to be stupid with a weapon, yesterday. From all we have heard it's a great department to work for and a sheriff that watches your back. He is one of 5 guys they are hiring (right now).

As everybody knows who has been through this process with us it's been a long exhausting road, but it's well worth it. He would have gotten a start date yesterday but they were executing a search warrant for a major case. For those in the DFW area, they know what we are talking about. I won't mention the department for security purposes.

He is excited not only with being with this department BUT now he can justify all his firearms/shooting purchases on being able to write them off as work related (although we probably won't because it won't go over the standard deduction)...LOL

Excellent news. Congratulations and be careful out there.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

and why is that? Besides for all that know him, know that the SO is a better fit for him than a PD.

political reasons .... the difference in the way departments are operated (particularly the "big city" PD's vs the County depts.)

Usually a lot more free reign and much less oversight with a sheriffs office at least from what I've seen.

We aren't allowed to do hardly anything. No pursuits, no pitting cars, get over 50 in a pursuit and we're ordered to discontinue and the county or state patrol takes over.

They also have a lot more budget to replace crashed cars, lawsuits and such.

Yeah, but it does depend on where you live. In NH, at least when I lived there, sheriffs were pretty much just process servers. "Real" LE were local PD and state police.

In Colorado SOs are primary LE in, geographically, most of the state. Other extreme is here the city and county of Denver where the sheriff's office primarily just does corrections.

And...congrats to jlottmc...along with wishes for long and successful career.

I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
                  "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?

Me, I'm staying out of Texas, why take chances ya know.

You do be careful out there though boy, there's some bad deparadoes out there. I know you know how to handle em, just don't let em sneak up on ya or catch you dozin.

If you get in a jam you call and I'll come back ya up, maybe some of our other Texas members could help hold em off till I get there. Might take me a spell to get down there. Texas, that's south right, big ole place, can't miss it.
If they start speaking spanish I know I done gone too far.

                        Be safe.

My bad, I should have known, I think I hear it about 70% clear up here in the far north.

Even had a hispanic community group insist we run 2 man cars with one man being hispanic so they could communicate. So far so good, hasn't happened but I see it coming.

Thanks all. I still have some moving parts to work out, and the stuff in the news is not helping. I haven't been this geeked since I enlisted. BTW, I was going to say something after I had the moving parts done, but the wife just had to spill the beans.

Several times now I have tried to post the above, and keep getting a message saying that my post is too short. Even after I try to ask WTF. I cleared all browser cookies, and everything else out of firefox a few times and still no joy. I will try on Chrome, if I get the same response, I will likely need a new computer, as this one will be evidence, and likely full of holes.
