  • RevRay's nightstand pistol condition

RevRay has been getting suggestions on which condition to choose for his nightstand pistol.

Now, for Kahr pistols, let's agree that Condition 0 and Condition 1 do not exist since we have no external hammer to cock.

    That leaves us with:
    • Condition 2 - loaded magazine & one in the chamber
    • Condition 3 - loaded magazine, empty chamber
    • Condition 4 - no magazine, empty chamber

Since RevRay says he's not always clear headed when first waking up, I'd recommend Condition 2 with the pistol in a holster. For me, that's enough to be sure I'm not going to grab the pistol with a finger in the trigger guard.

I'm with you. I'm condition 2, although I don't always have it in a holster. I guess you could be on to something about not accidentally grabbing it by the trigger. However I can see my cw9 in the dark with the night sights, I figured that was a advantage. My cw9 always sits next to my flashlight on the headboard.
    This place isn't safe.

All of my pistols are condition 2. The ones I keep in the safe that come with manual safeties have them engaged. More often than not, my LCP or CW9 is on my nightstand in condition 2 inside whatever holster I was using them with that day.

I let my guns breath at night or when I'm not wearing them so I don't keep them in the holster. I sometimes neglect the PM45 and leave it in the ankle rig just cause it's convenient.

I just try to keep them where I have to at least move a little bit in order to grab. I keep a Glock 21 in my night stand and my daily carry guns on top of my dresser on the other side of the chair. If I have time, I get in the chair and the daily carry's are at hand, if I don't have time then I go for the Glock.

The wheelchair creates some necessary provisions or hurdles but nothing insurmountable.

Every thing is loaded round in the chamber and c0cked and locked on the 1911.

For nightstand use, the Glock 23 with night sights. The mag is in with one in the chamber.

I don't keep it in a traditional holster, but to help reduce the chance of me grabbing it by the trigger while being awaken from slumber, I do keep a small kydex trigger holster I made for it. It has a length of braided paracord tied on to enable removing it with a quick yank.

            Something like the MIC holster?

On the night stand I have my M&P 45 full size with TFO sights chambered and not in a holster. The thumb safety is on. This is my only pistol with a thumb safety. I bought it exclusively for the night stand.

                Condition 2

But if you are a heavy sleeper and typically are 'out of it' when being awakened, then consider somewhere OTHER than on the nightstand where anyone else can easily access it as well.

A mattress holster out of view, in between a nightstand and the bed. Or even better, below the headboard above your head out of sight works well too if the bed allows it. These are also both good places if you are a heavy sleeper and have others (kids) in the house that might be in the room w/o your immediate knowledge (until you wake up and become coherent).

                ...and don't forget Condition 5 and 6.

Condition 5 = one on the chamber, empty mag
Condition 6 = empty chamber, empty mag, bullet in PJ pocket. This is also known as the 'Sleeping Barney Fife'.

I don't completely trust myself for the first few seconds out of deep sleep anymore, either. That's why neither Glocks nor S/A semi-autos will ever be my nightstand guns as I believe empty chamber defense weapons is just plain......not right.

At home bedside handgun is, and has been for decades, a K-frame Smith....HB 3" Model 13 for the last 15+ years. Wife's is same in stainless, M65. Kahr could work fine given they're long pull DAO. I just prefer what I be already using for the purpose.

There's some sound logic in that revolver talk. I might have to revisit my plan.

Off to gunbroker to look for a 3" model 13. YES!

I got some other revolver to use until one shows up.

Hope the wife buys this new plan. You rock Itxi, remember if my wife happens to call your a renowned self defense night stand expert and the 13 is the absolute only and bestest choice.

                    Wink, wink.....

Naw, you added that after I already looked. I just won't mention that part to her.

Too many words all at once confuses her anyhow, so maybe best to keep the waters good and muddy.

How did Jocko work his way into this conspiracy theory?

I'm making an appointment for a dementia test I think.

And, fwiw, most usual travel bedside gun is a 442. Sometimes the u&c day carry PM9. I prefer std pressure .38 for use in hotels, tho. They gots thin walls.
