  • "Prepper" Thread

Well, I had been considering one of these for years and the availability would come and go. I finally broke down and added this to my prepper preparations. I don't know for sure that it works, but I'll check online for any additional info.

I was KIND OF disapppointed that my Tritium sights didn't raise a reading... ditto for the smoke detectors... but I guess that's really a GOOD thing.

I can add this to my shelter under the staircase... along with the German Kevlar helmets and the assorted gas masks. The helmets are a good idea for storms, if you ducking a tornado or hurricane. There's time to consider your actions with the latter and good luck with getting into the shelter on the first one. My wife once talked about evacuating for a tornado... good trick, I explained... that she would be lucky to have time to bend over and kiss her @$$ goodbye! If we heard the much described freight train coming, we do our best to get into our planned shelter under the centrally-located stairway.

    Some pictures!

The manual has 1964 on the cover... the year I graduated from high School!

Do you notice that every day is like Christmas for me around here... and that the "OCD" in the box labeling might be fitting?!

Do you wonder that I need to sell a few "toys"??

    A few more pix!

I was just getting over your EMP concerns, then read One Second After which reignited them.

      Now this?

Unless your wearing the suit are you like dead if you get a reading on that thing.

I broke a tritium sight on a Beretta here a few years back. They went and got our meter similar to yours. I had excellent readings on my hands and arms.

I'm still alive so far so guess I'm ok.

I can see the container port and the Blount Island Terminal where military stuff comes and goes... helicopters... like when we deployed to the Gulf for the last Gulf War. It's as good a target as any, especially with the danged millions of containers going through there annually. I can see those giant cranes... and, I just thought it would be nice to know if we were getting radiation exposure... more than normal. It's not like you can see it... unless there's a mushroom cloud, but if I see that, it wouldn't be for long... blind from thermal flash and/or blast effect!

Now I need some canaries for gas detectors!

Interesting that you have the meter. Hopefully you know what to do with it. To determine if it even works, you might consider calling first and then taking it to a hospital (in a box), to the radiation therapy department and ask to speak to a medical physicist (or go to the physics department if they have a separate dept). Most medical physicists operate in or very close to therapy. Some medical physicists are very decent guys and might be nice enough to give it a quick test for you to see if it really works. If it does work, then what....do you have any radiation experience to know what to do with the information you meter? I worked on a hazardous materials de-contamination team as part of my responsibility in a medical physics department for a big part of my career. A meter alone is not going to do much for you beyond tell you that you are contaminated...in which case... your meter is probably contaminated too. However, it is useful in clean ups if the meter does not get contaminated. There is much, much more beyond the monitoring, clean up and controlling process. Just a quick heads up. Hope you never need it!

Yeah, I appreciate the info/advice. I figure that a baseline on a few settings and then an upsurge would give me some idea... better than nothing.

I don't recall any dosimeters being used when I preflighted "special weapons" or inventoried or coded the Permissive Action Links. There ARE some really sensitive instruments for detecting even shielded weapons, but I'm just interested in knowing that there might be radiation from a dirty bomb, as well as the more popular crowd-pleasers with KT or MT yields. I worked in delivery... anywhere, any time.

Wyntrout, I am a former Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense Specialist (MOS 5711) in the USMC. I would imagine your detector needs to be calibrated. Even modern detectors need to be calibrated at least annually, some more often.

Also, I wouldn't worry much about the radiation levels from a RDD or "dirty bomb." Generally a RDD would be more of a psychological weapon, with low levels of actual radiation.

Very cool though, and definitely not a bad thing to have around.

Bawanna, I was reading the owners manual for my CZ SP 01 tactical and they said (this is the God's honest truth) if you bread the tritium sight you should shower and then drink beer. The beer is a diuretic and will help flush the radiation from your body!!! I knew there was a reason I love guns with night sights!!

Me, either, but I did keep the wine down to about 500 ml... only because my son called and I didn't keep looking for stuff to go with it! 2 hours and 19 minutes... was really sipping!

Wifey returns Monday and I won't be able to play bachelor anymore! Dang! I have to clean this place up... projects all over the place... especially the "dining room table", otherwise known as my worktable!

I did get a table reserved for the gun show next weekend(21/22)... the big one now, so we can try to reduce inventory and recover some household funds that I "invested" in guns, ammo, magazines, and other stuff. Dang! I have way too much STUFF!

Not a good idea to have that kind of relations with your sights, then shower and drink beer. Neighbors might be watching.

Wynn, that might come in handy to test any seafood you eat that comes from the Pacific ocean, with that Japanese reactor spewing large amounts of radiation into the ocean.

Hmm... I do have some seafood... shrimp farmed in Thailand... from Costco. The similar product was $3 cheaper at Sam's Club but Wifey reacts to shrimp sometimes... hives. The ones from Costco haven't bothered her for a while, so I got some more of those a few days ago.

I don't have anything from the Pacific at the moment. I wonder about King Crab, though? The oysters I've gotten are from our east coast, but those from the western shores of Japan ought to glow in the dark!
