  • Anyone in the Columbus OH Area? Info needed

    Folks,

Son called yesterday to say he's being transferred to Columbus OH by the First of the Year. Would like some suggestions on nice safe areas to live, Getting his carry permit, lots of other info.
He's a lifelong PA resident, single and has always been a suburbs dweller.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

That notch in the rail is supposed to be there

      Columbus

Well, my data point is dated (1993). We were stationed at then Defense Supply Center Columbus for three years and lived on the south side. Had a daytime home invasion burglary by two teenagers who trashed the house and got heirloom guns plus other stuff. Wife still won't go through Columbus.

So I'd say avoid the south side.

Hilliard is also a nice suburb. My #2 son lives there. Upper middle class area. Very little crime.

He will have to visit the Dayton area and go through the wright patterson air force museum. i think it is the finest museum around. Be prepared tospend the day though. It is hugh and free..

It is about 3 hours from my home and when I get bored as hell I ride the bike ober there and go through it again, and again.

LaST TIME i ROAD OVER THERE, WHEN I PAKRED THE BIKE i TOOK OFF MY RIDING BOOTS AND PUT ON SOME TENNIES, so I set the boots by the bike. I guess it must have looked like a memorial or sumpin for when I came out there was a bunch of flowers there and $200 bucks in a box

Generally stay north of route 70 and you're ok but some of the suburbs, like Dublin, can get really pricey. Many who work in Columbus proper live 30-60 minutes out of town. The condos and apartments downtown can be pretty cool but those neighborhoods can be a little rough. There are some neat areas, like Short North, just north of downtown that could be interesting for a young single. Close to the university can be "productive" if you catch my drift. But the further from downtown, generally the safer.

+ 1 on visiting Wright-Patterson. I had a friend who worked in Indy and, when I was working in Columbus, we would meet at the museum and gawk at all the cool planes.

There's a really great sports outfitter, Fin Feather Fur, about an hour north on US71 that is a great source for ammo and shooting supplies. Decent used gun counter too.

Tell him welcome to Ohio. Really good people in Columbus.

I would say commute from Delaware (OH) (There are a lot of nice young ladies at Ohio Wesleyan University) Stay away from the south side, the short east (those are the 2 worst areas) and around campus can be a little rough (a lot of muggings).

Thanks for all the responses. the search narrows.
He's not looking at Worthington, OH. Seems like a nice place. A little pricey.
                      Any feedback on that area?

Just realized I confused myself. He WAS looking at Worthington. I typo-ed now with not. He's NOW looking seriously at Hilliard.

The kid steps in poop constantly. He's currently (as in right this minute) sitting in Ohio Stadium watching his alma mater Penn State and OSU.

He's been a whole week in Columbus and really likes the city and the burbs.

                            Final update to this thread:

Moved the kid in this weekend in Hilliard, OH. My wife and I went out Friday to help him get settled. Really like the area and the city. I think he'll do great there. Seems friendly and similar to what he grew up in.

                            Thanks for the suggestions!
