Two summers ago I attended a reunion of the USS Nitro crew members. We toured the Great Lakes Navel Training Center and attended a graduation ceremony of new recruits. Everyone on the base treated us like royalty. The Navy takes care of it's own. I salute your father for his service.

            Not quite true. When an officer is transferring/leaving permanently or when any crew member (enlisted or officer) is retiring then they are piped ashore.
