  • Hawk

While walking through a wash the other day, I espied a hawk (I believe it's a Red Tail) sitting on top of a dead tree.

It was kind enough to let me move closer for a telephoto shot from my little Cyper-shot DSC-WX150.

In the photo it kind of looks like it's checking out the jet, but I think (and for firearm content) it was admiring my CW45 in it's Mitch Rosen holster

    Regards,
    Greg

When I was foolish and much younger I used to shoot everything that moved.
Eventually the area I hunted was void of anything that crawled or flew.
It gave me a moment to pause and consider what I was doing.
These days I relish nature and kill nothing that isn't trying to kill me.

      Nice picture.

Sad that hawks eyes make them look so mean and hateful all the time. I'm sure they are very pleasant and content waiting for everything to die so they can eat it. Maybe I got that mixed up with Vultures. I hate vultures.

That last pic is a Ptarmigan isn't it? Note the not so mean eyes. Pretty bird.

Geez, just looked again at the pretty bird and see he's standing on a dead squirrel with a trophy size tail. That's gotta be a record holder right there.

Cool stuff. When I am out in my camo bow hunting and I see a red tail I will flit my hand against a tree like a squirrel tail bouncing up and down. Very often the hawk will swoop down to try to attack it. On the way, it will always see me and turn inside out in mid air to change direction. Amazing to watch a hawk chase down a squirrel in a tree. Neat bird. Great Pics.

The hawk scared the squirrel to death and made his hair stand up!

Fantastic pics Greg and Bill!!! They are really cool and very sharp shots. I am in the market for a new pocket sized camera and if that Cyper-shot DSC-WX150 of yours Greg is capable of that kind of quality I am going to have to put it high on my list to check out.

I love watching the hawks around my house here in the valley, here is one that I managed to get a shot of that was way up in an old tree right beside my driveway.

Nice shots guys. The one I took was from last winter, around this time of the year. I can't recall if I was able to get the bathroom window up or simply took the shot through the window.

Killing hawks is a federal violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, punishable by up to a $5,000 fine and six months in prison. Even possession of feathers you may find on the ground is illegal, unless you are Native American and using them in tribal rituals.

We were all young and foolish at one time, I've seen other hunters take a shot at a hawk, many years ago.
