I was just a gleam in my father's eye when the Laffe saw action. It was a Sumner Class destroyer, the predecessor to the Fletcher class destroyers that I rearmed as a lad. Those guns were still in use when I served.

Two of the best Boy Scout overnight trips we ever went on was to Charleston S.C. to visit Patriots Point Naval Museum where the USS Laffey is on display along with the USS Yorktown Essex class carrier and the USS Clamagore a Balao class WWII submarine...Don't know what Balao means but it must stand for extremely small and very cramped, I can't imagine serving in one of those for any length of time...

The Laffey was very interesting to explore because everything was open to walk through and what struck me was that it seemed to be a rather small ship as I always thought a Destroyer was huge which is how the movies makes them seem but I was amazed how such a smallish ship could have sustained the damage that the Laffey took from bombs and a Kamikaze hit to the rear gun turret and still stay afloat. My hats off to those men who fought and lived to save the ship and to those men who never had a chance from the kamikaze hit and never made it home....

The Yorktown was amazing to tour and I want to go back someday...The first trip we slept in the enlisted men section which is 4 high canvas hammocks held by chains from the ceiling (not my select comfort by any means) the second trip we slept in the officers quarters and the lesson I learned was that if ever in the Navy it's good to be an officer, much nicer....The Yorktown was built in just 16 1/2 months which to me is an impossible feat and I am blown away that anyone could engineer, wire and equip such a monster in that length of time....

Last weekend the WWII B-17 Bomber "Memphis Belle" came to Atlanta and my younger son and I got to climb through it between flights...Would have loved to take a flight but it was $400.00 a head so we just enjoyed her on the ground...Like the Laffey the B-17 seemed very small and cramped inside not like the movies which make them look like a 737 or larger....I can't imagine being in one of those things for a 10 hour mission in sub zero temperaures while seeing your friends being shot down in other bombers just like the one you were in.....

It blows my mind how brave those kids were that fought and died to save the world and keep America free and they really were "The Greatest Generation"

My Dad flew 33 missions over Nazi in one of those b-17 he's 89 doing well and he's got a plaque called " Member of the "Lucky Bastards club"
siting every mission and it's target rather amazing!

My now deceased good frined and stock broker for raymond James, flew the 17 and was shot down twice, Once the French found him and got him b back. (I think at the time they found him there werei the proces of burying their new unused, unshot rifles) and tyhey got him back across the lines, The second time, he was able to fly it into friendly territory ad then bailed out. He as 19 when he first flew. He told me once the 17 could take more hits than any planbe at that time and get back home. He never talked about the war either, His son knew more than I did, and kwhat a loss of great HISTORY.
He tod me the second time he bailed he suffered a hellof a rupture as he didnb't have his shut on good enough and when it opened it damn near busted his balls.. Just sayin
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

I spent 15 years at sea on five different ships and couldn't even fathom what WWII was like. There were so many sea battles, many forgotten, and so many lives lost.

Out classed, Out gunned but never out fought...
                  USS Johnston
                  USS Hoel
                  and the might but tiny
                  USS Samuel B. Roberts

They exemplify the finest traditions of the US Navy. So many stories of courage and sacrifice from WWII. Anyone who contend these men are not worthy of the label "the greatest generation" needs to put down the cell phone and get off Facebook. The history is there for reading.
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
                  "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
                  "more stuff than you are"
