Tennessee Senate Votes to Weaken Common Core

This week, patriots like you scored another big victory.

The Tennessee State Senate passed a number of bills that weaken Common Core standards. The legislation reasserts Tennessee’s right to run its schools the way parents and teachers think is best, not DC. And one of the bills ensures Common Core data collection is limited exclusively to education progress.
This was a powerful first step in the fight to permanently stop Common Core. Progressives in DC want to control every single aspect of education in our country. They despise locally-based education standards. But the momentum is on our side, and in the end we will beat Common Core.


Conservative grassroots activists are fighting Common Core across America. They know top-down standards don’t work. They KNOW that Common Core leaves our country, and most importantly our kids, worse off.

Common Core needs to be stopped nationwide. And Tennessee is leading the fight.

But ever since a farmer growing wheat on his own property to feed his own hogs was ruled interstate commerce by the Supreme Court, politicians, judges and bureaucrats will convolute the Constitution in whatever manner they can to increase government control. I have to respectfully disagree. The common core establishes minimum standards that every high school student ought to know. Common core examples include basic math, algebra, geometry, etc. But, I think we can agree that level of understanding is not widespread.


On international math tests, the US consistently places in the mid-twenties. There is a reason why Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and others look oversees for talent. They are often unable to find it here. We owe it to our young people to establish clear levels of performance and to help them achieve them.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Your average American kid wants to grow up to be a rock star, or actor, or play professional sports, or be a mack daddy pimpin gangsta, or pump out babies for the welfare checks, none of which requires much education, but leaves plenty of time for drugging and drinking and getting laid. Parents that can, indulge kids with all the new electronic gizmos, and cater to their every whim. Legal immigrants, come here, and take full advantage of all the educational opportunities, and grow up to be Doctors, and Scientists, while the American kids sit in class and try to sneak texts in, and do enough to get by. I don't know if it's the same in your areas or not, but most of the highly skilled surgeons here are 1st, 2nd or even 3rd generation immigrants, while after that they become Americanized and lose some of that ambition. Most of them are Asian, or Middle Eastern, or Paki's or Indians.
My Brother married a Korean woman, and they had two kids, and man their was hell to pay if they didn't bring home straight A's. Both are college graduates, one went into the Air Force as a psychologist, and they paid off her student loans, then after her gig was up, she was offered the same job as a civilian at a very nice salary. The other kid, got involved in our local version of 7-11 and is in middle management for the chain now, making decent money. But many of the kids today just aren't motivated to take advantage of all the opportunities that are available. Nor are they willing to put the work in that it takes to be a successful engineer or Doctor or scientist or businessman.
If you could make a living playing Xbox, all the kids would be doing well. But too damn many of them are lazy and uninspired, and want to sleep all day and party all night. Half of the ones that go to college are there to party and hook up with other students. Basically wasting mommy and daddy's money. My brothers daughter met a guy in college and they ended up married. And with his college degree, he drove a garbage truck. What a waste. My niece basically supports the family, and I think he's on disability now from a messed up back. I know he doesn't work, because about every time I go to my car mechanic's in the afternoon, he is up there drinking beer. I don't think it matters much what you teach the kids, as over half of them are going to do just enough to get by, and forget it as soon as class is over.
We used to have people like Astronauts, and Jet Fighter pilots, and Police and Firemen and other worthy people as our heroes, now we have pieces of crap like Marilyn Manson, and Lady Gagme, and Bradgelina, and some pretty ignorant sports figures as role models. No wonder we are going to hell in a hand basket.

So how'd this country ever excel before the dept of education at both the state and federal level. Quality of education started sliding AFTER government standards started. After billions and billions spent by both levels of government over the last 40-50 years and we are worse off...and you thing more is the answer?

The greatest opposition to Common Core comes from lousy teachers intimidated by the teacher accountability component of CC.

Common Core ties teacher evaluations to the test scores of their students, and that scares the crap out of ineffective teachers. And in their effort to discredit CC, they managed to get "patriots" to carry their flag.

So now, "patriots" are leading the charge for the teachers' unions. And they don't have a clue they are doing so.

I agree there are lousy teachers that should be fired. Unfortunately there are also a lot of great teachers whose efforts should be recognized. Under today's system, they are all paid and retained based on primarily seniority. Why shouldn't student performance (i.e. common core standards) be a factor in teacher evaluations? If you didn't perform well at your job, excuses do not hold water. You would find a way to be successful or get fired.


I have taught at high school and now teach college. The majority of my best students are either foreign or first generation citizens. Why is that? I suspect the culture of hard work and excellence is not as strong here. Our society has too many distractions. How do we go back to where not doing something because it is easy and persistence is valued? That is what we are all struggling with. Great societies decline because rather than actually continuously performing and producing, they simply acted as if they were excellent.

Like so many other government programs its difficult to determine who is really a bad teacher and who is to say that the government worker doing the determining is doing their job.

Could have a very good teacher with very bad students. Could have a very bad teacher with a rare group of students who accell on their own despite a lousy teacher.

I'm reminded of a state case worker when I was injured on the job. She was lazy and covering her tracks. Her reports indicated that I was uncooperative, had no interest in training or getting a job I could do. I only found this out via an occupational counselor who didn't think something was right. I had a lawyer get all my records and sure enough she was not reporting the truth.
The occupational counselor sent in a lengthy report indicating I had visited several potential employers and 3 community colleges on my own proving the violet case worker was a pathetic loser, liar.

The system is too big, keep big brother out of education, let the locals or at most the state determine the standards.

Indiana Ditches Common Core Standards

Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed into law a bill that dumps the State’s participation in Federal Common Core educational standards and requires instead that Indiana come up with its own set of guidelines.
“I believe our students are best served when decisions about education are made at the State and local level,” said Pence today. “By signing this legislation, Indiana has taken an important step forward in developing academic standards that are written by Hoosiers, for Hoosiers, and are uncommonly high.”
Indiana was an early adopter of Common Core in 2010, and was eventually joined by 45 other States in adopting the Federal benchmark model. President Barack Obama has promoted the nationwide adoption of Common Core standards by offering States incentive grants through the Federal “Race to the Top” initiative.
Indiana is the first State to drop the controversial one-size set of standards. Pence said he believes the replacement standards currently being developed by State educators, stakeholders and elected representatives will provide a blueprint for academic achievement that more faithfully reflects the aspirations of his constituents.
“As the task of writing our new academic standards continues, I am grateful to the more than 100 Indiana educators who have put thousands of hours into a comprehensive, transparent, and rigorous process of academic review and am confident that our state will produce Indiana standards that will prepare our students for success in college, careers, and life,” he said.
