  • My kahr days my be over

I have spent 38 years shooting and almost as many in construction. Found out swing a hammer with the butt in the center of your palm generates lots of head speed BUTT applies a lot of pressure on the median nerve in your hand too. Had surgery one for carpial tunnel 9 years ago.

I have had a couple new sues with my right hand for a while. Went to a hand surgeon a while back and got few shots of steroid in 3 fingers to try to help with a condition known as Trigger Finger and brace to try to make some nerve issues better in my hand. Went back today an was told it time for surgery again. Going in Monday morning and will have 6 weeks to heal up be for shooting anything with that hand. Now I get to try to master my mouse , a tooth brush, hair brush and a few more things with my left hand. Honey !!! Help.

The Doc is a shooter and told me NO MORE hard recoiling snappy handguns. His opinion is to find a wide double stack heavy soft shooting pistol to keep form dealing with this again. I need to spread the recoil out over a wider area. No more 357 or 44mag hot loads . No more kahrs, atleast not the poly or skinny handguns. Maybe a T9??

Guess I'll drag my old CC out , a Taurus 85ss with a soft rubber grip that's been hiding in the dark dusty corners of the gun safe and start practice more as a lefty and try to figure out what the heck I will do with my pet CC's, my tp40 and cm9 .

Guess over the next 6 weeks I'l be looking at heavier double stack 9mms to try as a lefty. Gota get a cheap lefty holster for my snubby too.

I've also had surgery for trigger finger a few years back. Still have it in a few other fingers from time to time but have gotten relief by taking fish oil and Prim Rose supplements. Most of my practice is with Airsoft pistols. I have two blowback Airsoft pistols a Glock 26 and an XDM Compact .45. Of course I still shoot my SD hand guns but not as much as before. I have a Ruger .44 mag Blackhawk and went back from a rubber grip to the standard wood grips. Ruger now rolls more from the recoil than straight back from when I had been using the rubber grips.

Do what you gotta do but stayed armed.

Maybe a K9 would work. A little more weight and we could whittle out some wood grips and leave them a little squared off at the back for more recoil bearing surface.
I'd rather eat barb wire than have folks think I was left handed but if that's the only option I guess you could put a paper sack over your head to protect your identity.

I know the last 6 months my hands have been hurting. The price we carpenters pay in later life.
I haven't got no shots or operations yet. Holding off as long as I can. Might be time for a full time power chair too, pushing the manual aggravates it quite a bit.

Good idea but be warned if your ever raped it's probably because of the choice of sack you wore.

K9, Glock 9MM, 1911 .45, or a classic, shorter barrel single action Colt/Ruger revolver in .38? I feel your pain. To some extent literally.

I actually like the first one better. Looking cool or in that case cute is job 1. I'll take my chances.

You have my sympathy. Last fall, I overdid it working on my 114 y/o house and ended up with severe carpal tunnel in my right hand. I could not pull the trigger on any handgun I owned except for my 1911s and I couldn't flip the safety very well on them. This included my three Kahrs. I'd always practiced some left handed shooting but didn't shoot all that well...maybe paper plate accurate at 7 yds. I was surprised to find I shot my Kahr 9mms better left handed than any other handgun I owned. After surgery in Feb., I wasn't long being able to pull the trigger on my Kahrs again but I have some DAO and DA/SA autos & all my revolvers that I still have problems with. I traded a KT P11 that I never shot well & still can't pull the trigger and a PF9 that hadn't been fired since I got my CM9 and CW9s for a CT9 a few weeks ago. Instead of going away from Kahrs, I seem to be moving more to Kahr 9mms and away from everything else. Grip sleeves on all the Kahrs helped a lot but I'm not shooting near what I used to. Dr. said I may get a little more strength back but never 100% so I may have a bunch of handguns of no use to me?

Hope your shootin' hand gets better!

I'd keep my kahrs and work on the grips. Maybe get creative and make a super hogue grip for a cw9 or something. Like the B man said get a K series and work on the wood grips.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

Bill K I have been putting off getting an airsoft for so long. I have a great basement to play in too. Got get one. It can help with lefty practice too !! I have sort of tried my 357 to soft fun loads and have hougue grips on both dan Wesson revolvers to that may work out. The 44 weights like 64oz so got the heavy part covered . Maybe by hunting season I can fling some hot loads from it. It got more push than snap at its weight.

bawanna Eat barbed wire. Funny I do understand . I can shoot well as a lefty . It pulling the handgun and re-holstering it that's the scarry part. No dam tellin were it may end up. And slow as hell. A buddy and I went wide open at work moon lighting and build small homes on the side for years between hunting seasons. When it all caught up to me after 37 years it did not leave much worth while behind. I am becoming broken down shadow of my self. But I'm still standing , sort of. For now.
I meet a follow in a lows 4 or 5 years ago that had a wheel chair that could stand up on the rear two wheels. Looked me in the eye. it would sort of wiggle back and forth . Very cool chair but now gone under. Saw a video lookin for it if a sit down Segway chair. Fast , werd , I want one !! Don't hold off to long . I have done that twice now , stupid. I have not held a T or K series yet. Looks to be a fair alount wider but that could not wrong. Atleast those all SS model are heavier.

ltxi I can't do a glock. I can shoot them all right just hate the grip. I have a 45 cal 1911 now, one reason I was thinking of the double stack mid size from ria. I load too so could change spring for soft loads , I don't know. I have to pick up my wifes new M&P pro optic 9mm tomorrow. I tend to do all the break ins but this time maybe as a lefty . See how it feels. Wider grip 26oz ?? In the mean time my old faithfull Taurus ss 85 will be getting some lefty time.

yqtszhj I gave my cw9 to my oldest girl for CC but I could try to load some 135 gr 40 at 1000 fps and see how that goes in the larger tp40 That and a 14 layers of inner tube on the grip.

Forestranger I use innertubes on the grips now . All I can do as stack a few more on to add some width and load some softy loads and see how it feels. I like my thin light kahrs . Not sure how to think about wide heavy pistols but I got a do what I can to keep CC and shooting. Heck its going to take me a couple years just to write off the reloading equipment. I sure wish I was a little smarter when I was younger and not abused my self so much as its sure showing up now . Whats the old say'n, If your dumb you better be tough. Dam I missed out on both end or just run out of tough.

I have some time to scratch and sniff about this . I see Bud's opened a new store about 2 1/4 hrs from me in severville tn . Might ride over in a couple weeks and fondle a bunch of handguns.
                      Thanks guys.

Best of luck Hardluck1. I'm sure you'll be right as rain after the doc's finished. You're probably tougher than you give yourself credit.

It's not exactly carry size but I think a CZ 75 9mm would serve you well for the home and range. Double stack, large capacity, nice weight to it. The ergonomics are great and if the first double action pull gives your hand any trouble you can always keep it safely cocked and locked like a 1911. It barely recoils at all.

I get called hard headed all the time too. I don't enjoy doctor visits much. Kind of like lawyers they take a simple issue and turn it into a huge production.

If it ain't broke don't fix it or use the body like ya stole it applies.
