  • Range Report Kahr PM9 (400 rds)

Took the Kahr PM9 for a ride today... and what a ride it was...

This was my first time shooting a Kahr, the only time I've had with this gun consisted of cleaning/lubing it (field strip), overall inspection, and I may have dry fired it 20 times max before today..

My first impressions when I got this gun were good, in fact very good.. I like the way it feels in the hand, sight picture, overall balance, and fit and finish (other than the stupid tab under slide not being flush )

Enter the range: Kahr PM9 Black Diamond 3 dot night sights, with seven factory Kahr mags, 6rd-7rd and one 8 round mag..

I shot a mixture of 400 rounds of ammunition that were all handloaded by yours truly, 115gr Berry's RN, 147gr Berry RN and a guinea pig in the mix of 100 rounds of Xtreme 147gr RN (this was my first time loading/shooting this bullet).. All mixed range brass that had been cycled by me already 2-3 times...

I first started on paper to see where I was on target, grip, and trigger control at 12 yards..
after about 50 rounds I seen I was pulling to the low left, I continued to compensate for this the next 100 rounds on paper and steel challenge (silhouettes and 6" plate tree)..

Kahr's trigger is really smooth however I wasn't use to the break and feel I was jerking the gun a little, I continued to examine my finger placement as well as follow through, my shots eventually got better..

At 300 rounds the webbing between the thumb and finger was agitated as well was my pinky (?).. I continued to pay close attention to how I was holding this small pistol, I have medium to average size hands... and wear a large size glove I felt I had to pay close attention to positioning the pistol in the web, I choke up as high as I can to slide.. I feel this is user error and I was simply griping to hard, and the aggressive texture on the grips took a toll...

At 400 rounds I really felt comfortable with my overall accuracy, the gun has very manageable recoil and is a non issue, follow up shots were easily accomplished while pivoting, and I used up several mags or more easily rapid firing at small steel silhouettes... most on target from 12yrds

The only issues I had with the gun is the mags wont dump freely, maybe I should wet sand the mag well a little with 1,000 grit and WD40?? Other than that the gun ate every round FLAWLESSLY, no issues whatsoever..The only issue would be with the new kahr owners hand, I think I may wrap some Talon grips on this one as I think I tend to squeeze the small pistols grips far to much and with the Talons I may feel more comfortable knowing I don't have to... We'll see

    My Observation:
I brought three guns with me, the Kahr, a G26 and LCP, the Kahr was the first one I shot and I will tell anyone that's new to shooting, EVERY trigger takes getting used to, PERIOD.. Dry firing may help slightly but nothing can replicate live fire.... I shoot Glock's more than any other pistol I own and after 400 rounds with the PM9's trigger I found myself having to shoot 50 thru my G26 just to get reacquainted with the trigger.... I instantly noticed how much better the Glock fills my hand and feels extremely comfortable, but as I said I'm used to Glocks.... Maybe next session I will only bring the Kahr.... (that's gonna be hard to do)

I continued to shoot 250 thru the 26 and ended this trip with the LCP which was horrible in everyway imaginable compared to the other two, I ran 133 thru it and went home with an extra 300 rounds of 9MM that I brought just in case

    Overall Thoughts:
This gun is a runner, after reading/hearing about so many problems with Kahr I still wanted one, I've always liked them but the sticker has kept me a way (as well as the rep on the net over the last couple years)and there was no reason to buy one when I could buy a Glock, well the 42 isn't a 9 so here I am, and I'm happy to be.... I'm glad I took the chance even with negative press, I can't wait to get my CW380 as I'm positive it too will be a runner !!!!

I took a 40min video but after reviewing it the audio is horrible!! The wind wasn't kind in video land... I may try to edit some of the audio as well as shorten it a bit and see how it comes out, if I post it on Youtube I'll edit the link here....

Anyone have a tip to get the mags to drop freely?? other than my idea?? or what has worked for you??

    thanks for reading!!!!!
    RIP Muggsy

    Great report!

That's a lot of shooting for one session.

Even full neither of my two mags will drop more than half way out the grip.

Hmm... AFAIK, that's the same with mine. I say "AFAIK," because I press the release with my right thumb and catch the mag with my left. Never thought about letting it drop to the ground...

Here's a link discussing how to fix your mag drop free issue.

Glad your PM9 is running well. 400 rounds in one session is a bunch. As for shooting low left, as you get comfortable with the Kahr trigger it will shoot as aimed. Forget looking for the break. Just smoothly and evenly pull straight back keeping the rest of your hand and other fingers steady. As for the aggressive grip texture, suggest trying a 1.75" bicycle inner tube. Works great.

Yes it is... I brought 950rds just in 9mm alone just in case.... ended up shooting 650 9mm ..
if I have any ammo in the mag they will all drop free...

well if its dropping 'empty' whether in your hand or not its dropping, mine wont... though I only have one flush mag out of the bunch and that one sometimes dropped when it felt like it...maybe 10% of the time

thanks.... yeah I had an inner tube on my LCP, first time I shot it like that was today.. Its started slipping off a little so I got rid of it, but that same size tube on the kahr grip may be tighter, I'll give it a try....

Going to IDPA saturday morning should be pretty fun (spectating)... Maybe the wife will actually want to go out and shoot her new LC9S, shes off on Tuesday so maybe we'll make a date of it and will give me the chance to take out the PM again..

First trip to the range with the CW9 we found the grip a bit harsh. I took a sanding pad to it and rounded the corners on the nubs a bit. I also put on a Handall jr later but it is fine without it. I find the grip a tad small for my hand, causes my trigger finger not to be in the right place or move as it should, Handall Jr doesn't totally fix it but does make it better. Some people find moving the finger around on the trigger until they find the sweet spot does the trick. My K9 is a bit larger in the grip and I purchased some wood grips they are a bit larger and fit my hand better. I find tho that I need some longer screws.. purchased some, they are longer BUT the threads don't go all the way out and thus don't grip to my satisfaction.

I tried tried to bend one of the mags a bit and it did help it release a little better but I didn't really didn't add a lot of pressure when I bent it seeing how I've read these mags are prone to cracking... and I'd rather have dependable mags...

I think it will just become a non issue for me as I don't intend to compete with this gun...

I may have to see about sanding the grip edges, sleeve it, or add the talons if I can't adjust to the way it is stock... Then again 400 rounds with this small gun was torturous without gloves, and I have callused hands..!!

also regarding the mags, they obviously had plenty of tension pushing more rounds in them and I found my thumb was rubbing against the top rails at the follower, I tried to be observant of this and push by the bullet itself but would slip time to time, this also irritated my thumb..

For those interested, I just sanded down one 7rd mag with 600 first then 1000grit and wd40 applied to paper... WORKED.... mag drops freely and is polished to boot....

Congrats on the PM9! Awesome little pistol. Pretty snappy pistol to shoot that many rounds! Bravo!
So many problems with kahr? My kahr's have been completely reliable. If you ever have a problem, I've heard that their customer service is great. Should take care of any potential problems! Have fun!
