  • Traveling to Illinois - Help Needed

I'm going to be in IL over 9/11, and I would really like to be prepared. From what I can read, I can take guns, but no ammo. I understand transporting the firearms, but is there any way that I can legally bring ammo. I'm a bit worried about SHTF while on the road.

    Thanks for the help!

Gun in a sealed container of some sort and ammo separate from the gun. What part of the state will you be in?

I'll pray for you and hope you get out alive.

Never do what I say or suggest but if I had to go to Chicago (heaven freaking forbid) my gun would not be in a sealed container and ammo would most definitely not be kept separate and there would be plenty of it.

What the heck is in Chicago that you can't get in NC or some other human populated area.

        Don't go. Save yourself.

I would not give the law a second thought. Drive right, make sure your legal, conceal well and get the hell out quick as you can.

This is because Illinois does not recognize a permit from any other state?

If you have a licence from your state you can carry only in your car. If it is unloaded and in a case (I use a backpack) you are good to go
Who said you can't have ammo? You just can't buy any

                  Don't go.
I did some work in central Ill. 2 years ago. One of the locals had gotten in trouble for leaving his pistol at home with his wife. She did not have an owners permit and was in charge of the weapon. You cannot even handle a pistol at a gun store unless you have an owners permit. Crazy state.

Dont go. I went up there for 2 basic training graduations and have decided not to go back again. Twice recently was enough.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

                      Consider a shotgun.

I wish you luck. I would drive around that state instead of through it. I don't feel the need to give them any tax revenue. I understand if you have business there, but that is one crazy state. I've been to Chicago once, that was enough

funny... seems like IL has super strict gun laws... but my sister (who lives in chicago) says its like a war zone with people getting shot like every day..
but super strict gun laws prevent bad guys from shooting people! (sarcasm)

Driving through IL is pretty ok now if you have a home state carry permit. Stopping overnight/visiting still be a troublesome pita.

My son is going to school in the Chicago area, and I have business there too. It cannot be avoided. I really don't want to be there over 9/11, but that cannot be avoided either.

Thanks for all the feedback. Wish me luck! At least, I'm driving my own vehicle this time instead of flying.
