  • Gun cleaner question...

I remember reading on this site in the past that you should use only non-chlorinated brake cleaner, if you use that, to blast out the striker channel. Why non-chlorinated and what brand might be that way ?
I don't want to eat up any metal parts that might be in there

It's my understanding that chlorinated brake cleaner may be harmful to the striker parts (specifically the plastic striker spring guide) where non-chlorinated gets the Jocko seal of approval. Both will peel the paint off your sights so be careful with it. Most and/or all brands make both kinds so look at the labels.

I've used brake cleanr liberally on mine, sticking the nozzle in the clean out holes and then squirting it all over the underside of the slide, obviously wearing safety glasses and holding it down and away from my face. It ran all over the outside and did no harm that i can see to the sights. I used an old hair blower I keep in the shed to blow off the excess and then left it sitting for a good while before lubing and reassembling.

Both cleaners will get the job done with no harm to the gun. The non-chlorinated version is safer to use from a health standpoint and is less polluting. In some states non-chlorinated brake cleaner is the only type available. Brake cleaner will dissolve paint, so avoid getting it on your sights.

It works well, but like mentioned, don't use it around anything painted. It ate some paint off the bolt carrier on my Maadi AK, so be careful what it gets on.

I use it to blow out my cleanout holes every time I clean my Kahrs. It also strips off any lubricant if you use it for general gun cleaning, so be sure to re-lubricate accordingly. Also, I've never gotten any on wooden grips but I've heard it will damage them.
