I can see some real advantages to this design strictly from an engineering perspective of course.

Rode six miles to school in a Jeep with an aluminum cab on it. Heater wasn't much, windshield wipers were worse, but worst of all was the teacher/driver from FLA that had no idea how to drive in snow and mud. Hadn't been in one since the 8th grade.

Traded into a Grand Cherokee last year.. They've improved some over the years. It's finer than frog's hair.

I've got a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport sitting out in the driveway right now (which reminds me, I need to go disconnect the battery charger). Had it since new, 190,000+ miles on the clock. Runs like a champ. It was my daily driver for years. Great thing about it is I don't really care if it gets dirty or if someone does something stupid in front of it. It's a Jeep!

Makes for a great vehicle when it snows and nobody else in the neighborhood can get up the hill. I just wave as I go by. :-)

                        Here are my two
1989 XJ - purchased with 19,000 miles on it in 1991 and have proudly preformed every fix on it since then except for a rear main seal and as she sits today has 331,419 miles.
I poo every time it rolls over another 100,000 and. Just. Keeps. Running.

The other is a 1977 J20 3/4 ton full size - it was a U.S. Forrest service truck here in Idaho, and somewhere along the line lost it's AMC 350 and got a hear transplant with an AMC Javelin 401 engine (engine code is for Javelin not the truck line)
It took very little (rear end work) to get it running again and is my weekend project, dump run truck.

That XJ looks pretty durn clean for 300,000 miles and 1989. You too good care of that one.

Thanks guys, the XJ qualifies for the 30 foot test - any closer and you see the scratches all through the paint, the lifting clear coat on the hood, the back part of the trim on the drivers door that took a sheet metal screw from the exterior to secure as I could not get the 3m trim glue to keep it secure.

Open the hood (and remember I said I did ALL the fixin' - did I mention I'm an Electrical Engineer with a strong streak of Yankee ingenuity?) So the vacuum regulator for the heat has been cut out and a rube goldberg dongle made out of brass and copper elbows with zip ties took its place.
The fuel high pressure rail is "fixed' in its own special way form generic NAPA parts
Lots of things are quite unique - the reason I bought it was the first owner dumped a bottle of brake fluid on the fuse block... break fluid melts phenolic plastic... so being an E/E I was not scared of rewiring or getting creative with the wiring, it is NO WHERE near factory wired,
I threw out the OBD I, the maintenance reminder computer, the cruise control (I would engage cruise and the accelerator would go to WARP 3) the wireless remote receiver in the vehicle was draining the battery -

So while it cleanups nice, it is no where near normal or factory- but it's mine and I know it inside and out and have no qualms about digging in to it when a new noise shows up... hell it's a JEEP.

The J 20 is great for junk, dump, wood stove fuel runs, I have a total of 2K$ in to it and it came pre dented and I don't care how many new battle scars it gets... character.
