So, Col, you're figgerin' the next life is gonna be better, huh?

I've been damn fortunate...not dead and still healthy long after my time. I put off retirement for a good 10 years due to please don't leave yet professional demand. Punched out this year at 72 'cause I figured I'd cheated destiny too long already and really didn't want to die at my desk...don't need the job and have stuff I wanna do. Also, because of wife's nervousness over being alone in a forest while I was, constantly, out of town on business, when we moved here 22 years ago we bought where we still live in a rural subdivision instead of several acre rural further out. Couple decades later I belatedly appreciate the decision...now right on the edge of rural with medical and other stuff/services minutes away and I don't have to spend a ton of energy I no longer have as much of on property upkeep. Right where I need/want to be. Life is good. Guess it's time for a heart attack.

Well, the offer got accepted, inspections are scheduled, and we're off to the races. Barring anything major, I should be able to start a shooting berm next spring. May have to have some dirt someone doesn't want, trucked in and dumped, for moving at my leisure. It's mostly sand up there, so, it will take some effort. I'm sure I'll get some shots off this year anyway. Will need to talk to neighbors and the town constable. There's a job for ya......town constable for a town of about 800. You can look up his logs online to see what he does every month, which is not much. Mostly about people dumping garbage along the railroad tracks. Luckily, I'm not near the tracks.

Well, after some discussions with Mrs. Bone, we decided against a shooting berm...............mainly because it's so pristine up there, that we don't want all of that lead on the property, and don't want to even try getting it out of the dirt............I was looking at a portable system called the Acreage Bullet Catch. Kind of pricey, and your metal plates will only go 5000-7000 rounds before replacement is necessary............has a thick rubber damper available to dampen the metal noise. Anybody here use a portable target system on your property, and if so, how much denaro was shelled out(if you don't mind me asking).?

I got about $100 in this one as it's mostly made of scraps. The center baffles are just old doors and the core gets filled with sand and dirt. The bullets get trapped between the layers. This one's pretty beefy as it's made to handle .223. I've tested it and they do indeed get trapped. I have another with some tongue and groove siding as the first layer to make sure pistol rounds penetrate then get trapped in the following layers. I got $0 invested in that one. It's good to have remodeling projects as they leave you with lots of leftover stuff. When the wood deteriorates, you tear it apart and that's a good opportunity to clean out the lead. Then you just rebuild it. They aren't portable but they work and they keep the lead contained in a small amount of dirt. I still recommend a berm or a hill behind the trap just to be safe.

That's the rural approach. The filing cabinets are good. Old appliances could work too. If you want metal, get out the cutting torch and welder and make one! That is half the fun.

I'll never drive out to Washington again, the politicians have ruined it. Specially that guy who lives on Pennsylvania Avenue, in the big white house.

Scared me there for a second, thought you was talking about my Washington, mine is pretty screwed up too but not as screwed up as that one with the White House.
