  • A new must-have... the Wheeler Professional Digital Trigger Scale

I got this new tool mostly because of Glocks. I routinely replace the connector with an after market one to lower the trigger pull or make it smoother.

I did this with Wifey's new Glock 43 and then found that ours had the new and improved connector, so maybe I didn't need to spend $20 on the Ghost Edge. I also wondered what the trigger pull was on my SIRT pistol as it hurts my trigger finger after a dozen or so pulls.

I had already put the factory improved connector back into the G43 so it was the first one to test. Some owners had reported 10-11 pounds or more, but reports on the new factory connector placed it closer to or below the advertised 5.5 pounds.

I had this scale on order at Amazon for a few weeks with an expected delay of 1-4 months! My cost was to be $74 and some change including tax. About 4-5 days ago I was notified they would be getting some this week so I clicked on the item and saw it was now advertised for about $8 less! I queried Amazon and they said that I would not get a lowered price. They didn't do that! So, I canceled that order and reordered it, getting it today... about two days later! I saved $8.

The scale has a nice plastic case that is foam-lined and that is in a bubble pack... just sustained a tiny scratch with little blood lost. I hate those bubble packs!

    Handy instructions on the rear:

I Began testing the G43... AFTER unloading it and checking that there was no ammo left in the pistol! I tried pulling the trigger with the sensor extended and as you would a conventional spring loaded scale. That wasn't the best way... finally read ALL of the instructions and found that the best way was to put the sensor between the trigger and your trigger finger so that you could better control the trigger pull. That's really a great way to test the pull, and only available with a scale as this one with the ball-joint-mounted sensor.

I took 10 measurements and had a low of 4 pounds 10 ounces with a high of just over 5 pounds 8 ounces. The average was about 5 pounds 5 ounces... great.

Next I had to check my SIRT LASER practice pistol. I thought surely the pull was 10 pounds or so, so I was really surprised that the pull was closer to 5 pounds! It's the narrow trigger that's causing me pain after a dozen or so trigger pulls... especially if done quickly.

I haven't gotten to the other pistols to check them, but I'm sure happy to be able to see what the trigger pull really is now for my pistols.

This is probably the best scale on the market. There were cheaper ones, but I really thought the sensor location would give more accurate and consistent results.

Now I would still like to get Wheeler Engineering's Sight Pusher. That's usually close to $200 after shipping... retail about $240. I read one review that said it broke on an XD of some sort, but that those are heated and pressed into place... really hard to remove. My cheap sight pusher works for me and I bought a Universal model by another company thinking it would be the same size with more adapters, but it's smaller. I will probably sell that at the next show and buy a Wheeler for about $185 or so on Amazon, but with a LONG wait.

Good God what happened to weights. Do I REALLY need to know the pull right to the gnats ass?

I have to admit I've often drooled over a trigger pull measuring device. But...I have been at it so long, I can usually guess at a trigger pull, pretty close too. After all isn't it the "feel" that counts? I know some Khar pistols are supposed to be around 6 pounds, but my pm9 feels like 5, my k9 feels like about 6, same for the cw380, but my pm45 is also about 5. I have fired the pm9 and pm45 about 10 times as much, so the triggers are "smoothed in". Glad you like you new tool. I recently purchased a Mepro Sight pusher, and man does that thing sing. It's an older model, but I got it at a great price. I have heard the XD pistols are a bear to change sights on, my local gun smith charges double for them. Sight replacements are usually 20, but XD's are 40.

Always wanted a nice trigger gauge.
I've asked gunsmiths to check my triggers on many occasions.
Admittedly, I've gotten pretty good at just feeling the trigger these days...
But knowing the exact lbs is sweet.

It will be nice to check all of my other guns. I still can't get over the SIRT pistol being only about 5 pounds!

I want one of those Wheeler sight pushers so bad. No one has them or I would have had one... not for retail, though.

When I had the XD45 I got a gunsmith to install my night sights. I just hadn't done any sights myself at that point.

I did send that Champion 1911 to Novak Sights to get night sights put on it... almost $300 with a discount! I decided I could do my own after that. I got tired of LOOKING for something to fit that pistol... and what would fit it... not a Kahr or a Glock. I can do those now.

It's late and I was waiting for the lottery drawings, so I decided to check the trigger pull on the pistols within reach without disturbing Wifey in bed.

My G30S and G23C have the Ghost Connectors installed so the trigger pull may be lower than stock. I only replaced the connectors, not the springs.

The average is based on 10 trigger pulls with the sensor between my finger and the trigger.

                  G23C: min 4 lbs 5.9 oz, max 5 lbs 1.9 oz, average 4 lbs 13.1 oz

                  G30S: min 4 lbs 7 oz, max 5 lbs 15 oz, average 5 lbs 12.3 oz.

                  Kahrs:

P9 with 5-lb striker spring installed and new recoil spring:
Min 5 lbs 11 oz, max 6 lbs 10.6 oz, average 6 lbs 6.4 oz.

P380 with 5-lb striker spring and new recoil springs:
Min 4 lbs 13 oz, max 5 lbs 10.7 oz, average 5 lbs 3 oz.

The G43 was already listed above. I still have my G21 SF to check and a few more Kahrs and a Ruger or two to check.

Okay... some more results and info on each item tested (posted on GT):

I tested the rest of my pistols and list those here.
                    Pistol Min(lbs-oz) Max Average

                    G21 SF with Ghost
                    3.5 Connector
                    and fairly new RSA: 4- 2.0 5- 15.7 4-14.7

                    Ruger M322/45 Lite
                    w. Majestic 3.2
                    Trigger Kit: 1- 4.0 2- 6.2 1-12.4

Kahr PM45 with "new" recoil assembly - had to remove one coil before slide could lock back!
                    and original striker spring: 5- 0.2 5-15.4 5- 7.9

Kahr P40 with 5-lb striker spring
                    and new RSA: 5-0.4 5-08.7 5- 01.0

Mech Tech/G-21 SF .45 ACP Carbine Unfired, still)
                    Ghost 3.5 Connector and
                    stock MT Blowback action: 3- 02.2 4- 08.1 3-10.8

I've had the MT with the dedicated G21 SF lower for over 2 years and haven't fired it. I decided to sell it for $1,100 -- less than I had in it with all of the upgrades, but have had no luck. I decided I wanted a .308 Semi-Auto, but prices had gone through the roof. I sold all of my Kriss 30-round mags but one and someday I might actually shoot it.
