  • Ammunition like a parachute.....

I was doing some study today about kabooms. Didn't do the math, but the vast majority of kabooms are due to defectively reloaded ammo, or ammo from very small cottage industry makers. The vast majority of whats left after that, are user error. Then the rest are a mix of defective "factory" ammo (large makers of ammo), and firearm defects.

I wonder what would happen if we substituted the word "parachute" for ammo.

Would you jump with a chute thats folded by a guy in his garage after work, and sold on the internet?

    Just sayin.

We saw a gun blow up a 1900 revolver. He was shooting reloads his Dad made 40 years ago!! He blew out one of the cylinders and bent the frame.
He was lucky he did get hurt, but he ruined a gun that his Granddad gave him!!
The cheap ammo. was a huge mistake!

Thats why I never got into reloading. I would probably blow myself up!

Great analogy. I've never reloaded simply because factory ammo is too readily available and I don't have match grade needs. I did buy commercial remanufactured ammo exactly ONCE. Never again, as it was wildly inconsistent in performance and shooting feel. Your comment on, "... by a guy in his garage after work.." is entirely appropriate.

Probably beats the alternative of jumping with no parachute at all but perhaps in my case what difference does it make.

I haven't reloaded in over 15 years, but never had a problem with my ammo. I seated the primers with the RCBS hand tool and could feel if one wasn't deep enough. I also dropped the powder manually in a single row at a time so that I could inspect all of the cases. Finished bullets were inspected and always worked fine for me.

I have had trouble with major factory new ammo... a squib with Federal FC, a slightly wrinkled case that wouldn't feed with Tulammo MAXX Brass, a Blazer Brass round that wouldn't fire... 3 tries and deep indentation... and several primers inserted sideways... one by Remington.

Stuff happens on the assembly lines. I kind of look at the primers at least now.

As I always say, I wouldn't have any problems jumping with my parachutes, but I wouldn't let others jump with them just incase I had screwed one up...and I definitely wouldn't jump using others parachutes!

Your way of looking at things makes it much easier to understand.

Yeah but I have to ask myself frequently, why does a woman keeping me straight feel worse than a really bad hangover??? Just doesn't seem right.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

                            Methinks you're doing it wrong.

Or maybe you're defining "straight" differently.

The parachute analogy is interesting.....back in the early 70's when I got into drag racing, I was running a Junior Fuel Dragster which used a parachute to assist in stopping. I was in the pits re-packing my parachute by the book [which took me about 15 minutes] when this other drag racer came over to me and said "let me show you how to do that, you are doing it wrong" he took the shoot and wrapped it around his arm used his foot to push it back in the holder and said " that's how you do it". I found out he was a well known racer, "Jungle Jim Liberman" so I let it be. My next run I was cranking my head trying to look over my shoulder to see if it was opening on the next run I made. Picture is of Jim in the pits, his wife on left, Jungle Pam, he was talking to Shirley Muldowny, on his right, another famous drag racer.
