The story is about a horse named "Reckless" who brought weapons to marines fighting in mountainous areas.

Just finished reading that myself. Actually he transported artillery shells mostly. During Korea. He was shipped back to the states and lived out his days at Camp Pendleton. He's buried there.

Sidney Poitier was awesome. He really made that film IMHO

I've known about Reckless for long time. She was of Mongolian breed out of a Thoroughbred dam. She was a small horse. There's a statue of her at Quantico. She had four fouls the last of which died at birth.

Horses have fantastic memories about what they learn. It may be second to an elephant.

I have this thing of finding out about the horses that actors ride in movies. Two horses of interest to me were Spike that Tom Selleck road in two movies Quigley & Last Stand at Saber River and given to him by the owner / trainer. And the other is RH Tecontender, one of the six paint horses used in the movie Hildago given to Viggo Mortenson.

Then there was that really good looking Appalossa, Cochise that John Wayne rode in the movie Eldorado. I read he really disliked that horse.
