I have always wondered why it was called a "Tommy gun". Can any of my learned brethren enlighten me?

I have a 27A1. I think Tommy is just a shortened up version of Thompson but thats just a guess, nothing to back that up with.

And the Thompson sub-machine gun was invented by John T Thompson, Thompson sub-machine gun shortened to Tommy Gun.
