  • Leather Holster Caused AD - IMPORTANT READ

No kidding, I freaked at reading the linked article. It tells the story well complete with pics as if being investigated. Please read even if you don't use leather as you can let some who do know what to look for. Also, now that I know I'll look for the signs even if I don't evangelize the issue (like I did my ladder incident).

The source site is something called "Its Tactical".

Please read it but the jist is a leather holster getting soft and folding over when buckling up in the car. The fold went into the trigger guard and when he straightened up from latching his seat belt the gun discharged.

Dang! His hip didn't look "just nicked and nothing a band aid wouldn't cover". That holster was really worn, too. Wynn

The lessons to be learned include:

Do not use a crappy holster. The outer leather of this wonderful Galco seems far flimsier than the inner. The holster probably spent a lot of time empty and the flimsy leather collapsed repeatedly until it formed a crease like a baseball glove.

Always pay attention when holstering your weapon. Always.

If the first two are challenging, trade your Glock for an XD or a slingshot.

Can you imagine how many times he came close before that last time? Wonder if he knew the holster was worn out and flimsy but told himself he'd replace it soon so kept using it. Kind sounds like a ladder I once knew that has now died and gone wherever naughty ladders go. He'll replace it with a high quality holster and wonder why he didn't do that a long time ago. Sigh...... Is shooting yourself in the *** worse than a concussion? Sure coulda been. We both are lucky to be alive.

I do not think ladders can be compared to holsters. I have a uh a friend who never ever forgets the responsibility required to safely carry a firearm. He owns what some may call too many very nice holsters. This same brilliant, handsome devil did once notice there was damage to fiberglass ladder he was using. Well he thought it would be ok for just one more piece of siding. He was wrong. There were no injuries that day but the ladder was dismembered and is currently being used to help rosie odonells mom reach the cookies on top of the refrigerator in ladder hell.

I agree nobody would try to climb a holster or put their gun in a ladder, but using something that you know is worn out and can harm you is similar if it be a holster or a ladder. I recently paid the price for my ladder as did that "brilliant, handsome devil" "friend" of yours. That guys holster looks so worn and creased that he had to know it wasn't right. Otherwise he needs more than his hip examined.

My point is don't get so familiar with your equipment that you ignore it's condition because that can come back to bite you in the ...hip - or head.

The internet poorly conveys wiseassery. I understood your point and agree. I just refused to accept that my friends ladder incident featured somewhat similar poor decision making. I just bought the new Ladder Safety and You VHS tape. It looks good.

if I had a holster that was that worn out I think I'd retire it. He should have paid a little more attention to his carry setup IMO.

I nearly always use leather holsters. I guess I learned two things from the story:

                    1. Buy a rather thick, stiff leather holster [which I do]

                    2. Never buy a Glock. [which I don't]

                        Dont blame the Glock.

No Glock has ever gone off by itself.

Agree the Glock isn't to blame. If it were a Kahr in that holster getting it's trigger pulled as the Glock did, I have no doubt it would have gone bang too.

If he had gone to the hospital and reported he was shot the police would have to be notified and then it hits the press. Just think what would the media say if they got their hands on this story.... "Radical Conservative Gun Nut Tea Party Racist Activist Shot by An Assault Glock!"; "Reverend" Wright would preach about his chicken coming home to roost for having a gun; Jessie would threaten to boycott if he didn't "contribute" $10,000; He would get added to the "no-fly list". Heck he might even get invited to the White House for a beer.

I saw this on one of my other forums too, this guy knew his holster had issues and he paid the price.... looks nothing like any of the stiff leather holsters i own!

"I can’t say I didn’t know the crease had been formed in the holster. I trained myself to be sure that when holstering, to make sure the gun was fully in the holster, with the trigger protected. On this day, did I forget to do that when I holstered up? Did the leather finally get so soft that a combination of body movements and interference by the cushy leather seat move the Glock enough to create a situation where the trigger was engaged by the holster?"
Focus on your front sight..... The rest should be blurry!

This was posted at Glock Talk too. The guy who posted it was trying to blame it on the Glock.

However, one look at that holster tells a different tale. Even if it weren't old and worn it doesn't look like it fully covers the trigger so it was an accident waiting to happen.
