First impression on .45 Auto - new Sig 1911

Picked up a lightly used Sig Sauer 1911 RCS Compact. Inspected it and lubed it before heading to the range. I've never shot a .45 auto before and was expecting the worst, especially in an alloy framed, compact edition weighing less than 27 oz. empty.

I warmed up by unloading my Sig P238 .380 Auto. Love this gun. Shot a few mags with my M&P9 and then loaded up some Remmington green and white box stuff, 230 gr FMJ. I've had good results with this ammo in 124 gr FMJ 9mm....but I digress.

I was pleasantly surprised. Recoil was less than 50% of the increase I expected. I found it easy to shoot well, found the Sig to be very accurate and left quite pleased with myself for finding this 1911 at a savings. Much more fun than shooting a PM9 or a M&P 9.

Do you remember your first .45?

I did have a FTF on the last round in the mag and was advised to buy a Wilson Combat mag. I did but haven't fired using the WC mag yet.

Good for you Rainman, nothing like a smooth running 1911 to make your day. I use nothing but Wilson mags. They work real good and the quality is in there. Never gave me an issue.

Ah yes, my first 45.
About 15 years ago I bought a classic new Sig Sauer P220 with an aluminum alloy frame,
nickle plated blue steel slide, nickle plated controls and night sights.
Still have the gun.
Sights have gone dark but the rest still looks new.
Much like a pretty young girl getting older it's time for some ***/tuck!
So I'm having installed by a Sig certified armorer as we speak;
Bar Sto stainless match barrel,
Bedair stainless guide rod,
XS Systems 24/4 Express night sights,
Sig spring kit,
and a trigger job. - LOL!
It was my second handgun.
The S&W 44 Mag 629-2 was my first.

Good for you Rainman, nothing like a smooth running 1911 to make your day. I use nothing but Wilson mags. They work real good and the quality is in there. Never gave me an issue.

My sig mags have a problem in feeding the last round. Does this simply mean I need to buy a new mag spring? What weight do I use?

Multiple mags with the same symptoms or just one. I'd try some Wilson mags or some like the McCormicks. There's several good 1911 mags out there. Can't say for sure a spring would cure it, could be the answer.

Might be able to borrow a mag if your at a range and see if its the mag for sure.

I bought one Wilson Combat but I was out of ammo so have not tried it yet. I haven't had time to figure out how to disassemble a SIG mag yet. Just ordered some ammo from Kyle's.

For 1911's Wilson mags are arguably the best. I'm also a huge fan of the Kimber mags. They can be had for a wee bit less than the Wilson's and are made well.

But, only the KimPro Tac-Mags, I am guessing. They are my favorite also, for flush loading 1911 magazines.

Many people have had poor results with the plain Kimber mags that ship with their pistols . . . just ask O'Dell.

Wilson's are renowned for their quality and performance, but do stick out the bottom of the gun. Some people like that. With my CBOB, I prefer flush magazines.

Yep, the KimPro-Tec mags work fine in my Ultra Carry II and my STI Escort, where the standard Kimber mags would not. I'm sure they would also work in my SIG C3, but I've had two, and the SIG mags have been perfect. I'm still a bit miffed at Kimber, first for supplying sub a standard mag in a $1000+ gun, and second, for refusing to allow me to trade up for the KimPro's. I've got two useless Kimber 7 rounders sitting in my safe.

As for the SIG 1911 C3, it's the only pistol I directly replaced after the first was stolen. Both have been flawless, and it's just as accurate as a FS 1911. It's a bit longer and heavier than the 3" 1911's, but I still carry it quite often. I also consider it the best looking of all my pistols.

How are those Sig 1911's? I've never really given them any thought, but they sure do look beautiful. I've never even handled one. Is there one that's considered the best bang for the buck?

As I said my two C3's have been flawless, and unlike Kimber's and STI's, they come with two mags and night sights. The C3 has the accuracy of a FS 1911, are .75 inches shorter, and weigh 29 ozs with an empty mag. The FS 1911's can weigh up to 40 ozs, which makes the C3 quite easy to carry. I paid under $800 NIB for mine earlier this year. I think that's an excellent 'Bang for the buck' for a quality 1911 when the Kimbers cost $1000+.
