  • Dodged a bullet

Once upon a time, I considered buying a Sig Mosquito .22LR. I didn't because I learned it had just a 1 year warranty. At the time they were also hard to find.

Today I learned the slide is zinc potmetal and there are cases of it blowing up while in use. There is a post on the Beretta Forum and another, with pictures, on the Rimfire Central forum.

I wouldn't be so quick to put the gun down (no pun intended). I have a friend who has a Mosquito and loves it. It shoots fine and is safe to shoot. I seriously doubt that Sig would put out a gun that is not safe. Do you really think Sig would not put tens of thousands of rounds through test guns to ensure safety and functionality before they are released?

Lots of firearms manufacturers use "pot" metal in their guns. That practice has been going on for decades. Problem is, we do not know what caused the failure. Or, where exactly the failure occured. No pics of the damaged slide. It is just one guy saying it blew up and it is the guns fault.

I thought Post # 7 was interesting. He says no one makes good 22 semi-auto's but Beretta. WTF? Guess he has never heard of Ruger, Browning and S&W (to name a few....).

Pesonally for me the Bereta line in 22's would not be at the top fmy list of 22's that I would want to own. If u can knock the Ruger line then, the discussion probalby should end right there for IMO ur making zero sense

I have a Ruger Mark ll That will shoot the balls off a gnat. I love that little gun. I put a red dot scope on it, and it is a squirrels worst nightmare..5'' stainless bull barrel. I am a believer..

The Mosquito is Zamac, not pure zinc. Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium-and Copper.

            Its designer pot-metal.

So are - the Walther P22, the Colt 1911 .22LR copies (not the Browning one, which is aluminum), Jennings, Raven, RG, and lots of other really garbage pistols.

Zamac should be restricted for use only in costume jewelry for 8 year old girls.

There were pics showing exactly were the slide split. The other guy didn't post pics but reported catching part of the slide just above his eye.

If Sig was so confident, why only give a one year warranty?

On the sigforum, there are large numbers of complaints re: slide failures on Mosquitos, and a lot of reference to the P22 as well. I nearly got one... then I did my research... zamac? No way Jose

On the Kahr forum there are lots of complaints of failures... Best not get one of those worthless things.

On the internet there are lots of pictures of blown up Glocks... Best not get one of those worthless things.

On the internet there are countless photos of blown up Remington 700's and complaints of the things going boom when someone took the safety off or just drove the bolt home.. best not get one of them owrhtless things.

If you bother to check there will be complaints about everything including sex... I dunno about you but I aint never complained about bad sex... Bad sex is still better than a good day at work.

Been enjoying the Mosquito the son got and would not hesitate to purchase another one. BUT if you bought one and want someone to take that sorry thing off your hands you can PM me with a deal I might not refuse...

Ruger doesn't give any warranty. (doesn't mean they will not repair something of course).

I would not base warranty length as a guide for quality of a firearm.

Very well put! My friend feels the same way about the Mosquito he got for his wife. It shoots like gangbusters. I try to keep two things in mind when I am looking at the internet.

1 - The complaints represent a very small fraction of product in the market.
2 - You are only hearing the side of the story the "teller" wants you to hear.

Things may not always be what they seem to be....

If the problems were attributed to condition caused by the very material the gun was made of.... that would be one thing. But Kahr, and Glock, and Remington seem to do a good job of it when correcting things, and we for one have many glowing reports of corrected issues right here on this very forum. At the end of the day the P22 and Mosquito are still zamac, which I guess they say is "good enough".

Thinking some on it, if those guns didn't have the Sig or Walther name on them... they probably would not stand the test of the marketplace.

I guess I'm on the other side of that fence. There are several Berettas near the top of my .22 wish list:
                              89 Target
                              87 Target
                              87 Cheetah

I'm not sure about the 89T, but the 87T and 87 are currently in production.
Alas, my only Beretta .22 is a model 101 Jaguar (I wouldn't mind having a related model 71 either):
