  • S&W 340pd or M&P 340 Experience?

Anyone have experiences or own either of these? I am not afraid of the lack of weight in either of these, because I don't see them as range guns.

I know the SP101 is great, but I won't carry it at that weight.

No direct experience, but the 340PD was on my short list until the M&P version came out. The steel line barrel and xs sight are enough of a selling point (in my opinion) for less $ to negate the couple of ounces heavier the M&P is. But, yea, on my short list and definitely the M&P. Just gotta get that Chiappa Rhino 200ds out of my head. Even at twice the weight of either of the Smiths, really want to go shoot one of those but good luck finding one of those around or knowing someone that owns one...too rare. I used to have a Smith airweight, but not in .357. Sold it when I transitioned to my P9. Stupid decision. Should have kept it.

I found an M&P 340 near me that is used for $525. Owner has lightened the trigger a bit and taken out the lock. I'm not sure I want the trigger lightened. The sight set up is a big seller for me too.

I have what I think pre-dates both of those guns.
            In the beginning there was the S&W 342 ti Air-Light 38 +P.
Titanium cylinder, aluminum alloy frame and stainless steel barrel.
The little gun fires jacketed bullets only and is +P rated in 38 special.
She weights 11.1 oz empty and 13.5 oz loaded with 135 gr Speer GDHP
            Short Barrel +P 38.

With a trigger job the DA is ~10.0 lbs.
Shoots POA at close range and is surprisingly accurate for a 1 7/8" barrel gun.
            The gun boots hard.
Firing a 357 mag at this weight would be kooky - IMHO.

Sounds like a good deal to me. That 340PD w/ the titanium and scadium (sp) is just crazy expensive. And I don't think a little less weight on the trigger would be a big deal. If it was like the airweight I had, it's probably a pretty heavy trigger to begin with, could use a little smoothing out and less weight IMO. For me, nothing more fun to shoot than a good DAO wheel gun with a smooth trigger. It's one reason I love my Sig P250 so much, smooth and high capacity. It's like a revolver with 3 cylinders in it. But I digress.

I didn't make him get rid of his - LOL!
                  That's his problem.
                  I'm just saying HA HA.

BTW I really think the S&W 342 is the ultimate pocket pistol.
It's so light and small you can forget it's in your pocket.
                  100% reliable with any ammo.
And she runs bone dry and dirty.

i have one of first 340 pd to hit this area it has 9.5lb trigger job and trillium big dot front sights. i really like the gun and carried for a year edc but at 5'10"185 i cannot shoot 357 with any speed. i was stuck with 38 +P so i decided i had more firepower with my pm9 and went back to it

I hear you, but they are very hard to find. Nobody is silly enough to get rid of one...just sayin'.

i dont carry guns with built in locks for self defense, but if you have a pre locked gun id say other than the miniscule amount of weight saved over a 642 (which is not fun with +p 158gr. LHP loads) shooting magnums outa that thing will be plain brutal.
I hate being bi-polar, its awsome!

None of my S&W revolvers have locks.

Jut told the guy that I would take the M&P340, so I just need to meet him at some point soon. He said the trigger work was just a spring swap, so easy to recreate the factory trigger if I want...doubt it. I know that the .357s will be stout, but I can shoot .38 as needed. As with any recoil, it is subjective.

I have a 638 with lock that I bought new. That model is not available new without the lock. I have never engaged the lock, never plan to. I have never felt any effect in the action that would indicate the lock is even there, much less any interference from it.

Why wouldn't you carry one? Do you think the lock will accidentally engage itself or something? Has this EVER happened?
                              Very interesting...
