Does anyone know how to tell if it is factory nickel? The nickel ones are rare.

You could run the numbers with S&W.
But that's expensive and takes some time.

I did find this with a search...

357 "Brushed Nickel" 28-2 Highway Patrol
The salesmans samples nickel H.P.s were in the
      N40xxx, to N43xxx range.

If yours is in this range you can be pretty sure it's authentic.

I don't recall ever seeing a factory nickeled model 28 but quit trying to keep up with S&W since the mid 80's

I called Smith and Wesson and got through and they said it was made in 1966 and may be a limited nickel gun; that if I wanted to know for sure it would cost me $50 to validate it....it's a model 28 Hiway Patrol version in 357 with 6" barell. Guy wants $600 for it?

Post it over here they will tell you what you want to know real fast. Under 1960-1980 revolvers. I maybe wrong but I think it should be in the 450-500 range.

Take the grips off and check the frame for a N stamp, that will signify a factory nickel gun.

When I talked to Smith they said some are marked with N and some were not...GOOD IDEA THOUGH, I will look.

Nice looking pistol. It would be a stretch to find a factory nickel gun not already identified as a collector piece. Price is pretty high for a regular 28. You need to factor in a set of S&W factory grips - small were standard. I think it would be a great shooter if you can get the price right of a standard M28. Perhaps you can get the seller to pop for the S&W factory info as it would validate the collector value.

It would be interesting to see how it letters from S&W.
Though it's a little hard to tell from the photos, there are some "red flags" (at least for me) that this is not factory nickel:
                      1. The hammer and trigger appear to be plated (though that might be the lighting in the photos or a really worn case colored finish).
                      2. The above applies to the rear sight as well (except it would need to be a really worn blued finish)
                      3. The fit of the side plate doesn't look right to me.
                      Regards,
                      Greg

It almost looks like someone has polished the gun. That would account for the fit of the side plate

Well....I bought it for $550, I do know the 28's are great shooters.
He claimed it was carried by a Massachusetts State Trooper and it came with supposedly the troopers uniform patches, lapel pins and whistle. Kinda cool...

Ten to one or better it's factory nickle.

I've seen/handled/shot/owned a lot of back then nickle Smiths. It has "the look".

Factory Nickle or not, you got a great looking shooter for a fair price. Enjoy!
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
                              "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
