  • Somebody talk me out of a Vaquero....

I've been jones'n for a vaquero for a long time. I've had three or four Blackhawks, two Super Blackhawks (the stainles one was #000069 !!). In the meantime I had the use of a Virginian Dragoon for a while, and I liked its round top, even though it was a big frame .44 mag. Always thought if Ruger would do a round top, especially without the slide sideways wedge rear sight in it, I'd get one. They did with the Vaquero, and now in later years, they've upped the ante with building the .45LC on the .357 size frame and put the old old XR-3 grip frame on it too.

There's an itch that I'd like to scratch. I've gotten very good at fancy handling my two little Bearcats, and I can point shoot them at about 15 feet and hit playing card most of the time. I'd really like to try that with the real McCoy* Colt, but that ain't gonna happen. So the Vaquero takes center stage.

Ok folks, somebody talk me out of it.... please!

Sorry, but I doubt I'll be of much assistance with that...I like'em
Still, here are some photos to help you make up your mind
My 2005 New Vaquero in .45 Colt

It came with a front sight tall enough that a little file work allows you to dial in the elevation for your favorite load/yardage:

I like the larger Vaquero as well:

I'm currently in a Guns Anonymous 12 step program, so I can't talk you off that ledge. Since I keep buying new guns I can't seem to get past step 1. I say buy it.

I always thought the 12 step program meant 12 guns???
But I passed 12 and nothing happened...

I've always wanted one of those too.
A real Colt SSA is so damned expensive.

Not sure my four Smiths would allow a Ruger in to join the family though...
My big all stainless Smith 629-2 44 Mountain Gun is my not so classic revolver.

I had a pair in 45LC when I was into Cowboy Action Shooting, they were fine weapons. I had an action job done on them. They were sweet.

What is all this "past tense" nonsense you guys keep using to refer to your nice guns?

Why in Hades would y'all get rid of them?

Wouldn't mind a Vaquero in .357 to go with my three screw Blackhawk.

The Rugers originally were like genuine Colts and they had 3 screws holding the side plate on. Ruger added the transfer bar ignition system so they can safely handle a full cylinder and not 5 like the colts that would fire if you dropped them on the hammer. Those had 2 or 4 I can't remember screws, but not 3.

The 3 screw is the way to tell they were the old style. Ruger upgraded everything to the transfer bar system free of charge. Some didn't send them in and they are sought after now days.

If your wanted an old original the 3 screw not upgraded would be the one to look for.

Otherwise they are all pretty much the same. Very strong, very tough.

I like the Vaquero and the Bisley. I have a Birdshead Vaquero. I like it very much. Have 3 Super Blackhawks, had a 357 but gave it to my daughter and her husband.
My first store bought gun was a 22 / 22 mag convertible which I still have too.
