New Taurus PT111 G2 Millenium

First, Let me begin by saying that I am an experienced and well-informed gun owner and enthusiast, so I don't need to be educated about Taurus handguns and how anyone who purchases a Taurus "must be an idiot". That being said, I suspect that there will be some Taurus-bashers unable to resist posting to this thread. To that end, I have donned my Nomex underwear, so flame away! To be fair, I do know that Taurus has had it's problems in the past, and there are people who have had legitimate negative experiences with some (mostly revolvers, I believe) models.

My goal was to find a reasonably-priced 9mm semi-auto for my daughter to have as a home-defense firearm. My plan includes setting up the gun with a rail-mounted laser/light combo. My daughter is not a gun enthusiast, so the gun I choose will spend most of it's time secured in a handgun safe under the bed, and fired maybe 2-3 times a year. I cannot afford an expensive gun (Glock, Sig, M&P, etc.) that will be unused most of the time, however, the gun I choose must be reliable, simple to use, and easy to rack the slide.

After considerable research (online reviews, YouTube reviews, etc.) I was unable to find a single negative review of the Taurus PT111 G2 Millenium. Hickock45 even gave it a glowing review (except he didn't care for the trigger break with his very large hands.)

Not being able to find any negative reviews, I went ahead and purchased one. I bought the gun from Palmetto State Armory for ONLY $199.00!!. They have them on sale occasionally at this price and I was able to snap one up. The list price is around $350.00 and Bud's, Grag-A-Gun, and other online retailers have them in the $230.00-$260.00 range, so I think I got a really good deal. Even after shipping and FFL fee, I was all-in for only $235.00!

The gun comes with 2 magazines, and a key for the Taurus built in security lock (which we will NOT be using). The gun comes with an adjustable rear sight (windage and elevation).

This morning I took it to the range. I ran around 150 rounds through it (combination of 115 & 124gr. FMJ range fodder and 124gr. HST JHP +P's). Right out of the box, the gun ran flawlessly, not a single malfunction. As an aside, this is more than I can say about any of the Kahr's I own or have owned.... The gun was soft-shooting and dead-nuts accurate. The gun has re-strike capability. In the event a round does not fire, you simply pull the trigger again in DA mode. The SA trigger pull is characterized by a fairly long take-up and then a crisp break at the rear.

I plan to add a laser/light combo on the rail. I am researching those presently, and am looking for something fairly inexpensive. I would welcome any input in that regard.

In summary, let me say that I am not a Taurus fan-boy. This was my first (and likely only) Taurus purchase. The gun is well-made and reliable. It is however, a budget gun and I frankly would not be interested in having one in my personal collection, as I have many other guns that fill the same role. For its intended use however (moderately-priced home defense gun for my daughter) it is a good choice.

No need for the flamesuit here. I'm not a basher it's just that I've never bought a Taurus. So I can't say good or bad. If you put yours thru its paces and it proves reliable, you certainly got a lot for a little $$$. I think when price is a major factor in a handgun intended for self defense, that throws up a red flag for a lot of us. But there's no need to spend more if this one does the trick. It's a sorta good looking thing IMHO...kind of M&P-like. Best of luck and enjoy

If it works for you it works for me. The chances are she'll never have to fire a shot in self defense or anger. Any gun is better than no gun.

No bash here. Likewise I never thought I would buy Taurus.
I was looking for a double stack with safety.
S&W M&P C would have been my first choice except when shooting my full size M&P 40, recoil would cause my thumb to inadvertently push the safety to ON position. (Still have the M&P but removed the safety.)
Like the Ruger SR9c, but too large.
On advice of LGS tried the Taurus Millenium PT 111 G2. Right size, felt fine in my small hands, refined, melted edges,adjustable sight, reliable. Kahr is my favorite trigger, but the Taurus trigger is just fine for self defense. Great value. In my case money was not so much an issue.The Millenium G2 seems to have all the kinks out of it compared to the predecessor. Feed ramp was rough which I polished. Never had function or feeding failures before or after. Certainly not for every one, but for what it is, it is just fine. If only it did not have the name "Taurus" on it.

I have had mixed luck with Taurus, and they will never be my first choice. I shot a friends PT111 G2 when I was doing the first range test of my CW380. The Kahr hand some issues to work out that trip. His Bodyguard ran great, but the trigger sucked. I was HIGHLY impressed by the Taurus. I'm not saying I'll get one, but if money was tight and I needed a gun, maybe. I'm not a Hi-Point basher either, but dollar for dollar, I would rather have the Taurus.

Just FYI, many of these models from Taurus are currently under recall. My dad has two of these, both in .45, one for the house, one for the truck. They have been having way too frequent jamming issues, and in his searching for an explanation lead to a long list of recall problems. Not saying you got a bad one, just may want to check into it, and make sure it's got any necessary upgrades to ensure its reliability.

After about 400 rounds of UMC not a single misfire or feed.

I ran a box of HST 124+ and no issues. Decent sights that are adjustable too.

It is about the same form factor as a g26. IMO it's a great EDC if you doubt want to spend a lot

Only if you add a +2 base on the 26, I laid my 27 on top of one, and the Taurus was a little bigger even without it's magazine (didn't remove the Glock mag).

According to my research, those issues you described were common to the previous generation. Taurus resolved those reliability issues in the Gen 2, and from everything I have read, it's like a completely different gun (I'm hoping so, anyway). As I said in my original post. I ran around 150 rounds through it right out of the box without a single malfunction, and I plan to run several hundred more rounds through it to be sure before I will feel comfortable turning it over to my daughter.

I won't say, " Friends don't let friends buy a Taurus", and I won't say, " If you want to trust your life to someone else, buy a Taurus", but if you feel confident that this firearm will suit and perform for your daughter, then your good to go...........................................If it was my daughter, I would think twice.............and prefer a simpler revolver myself, something with big booolits. In Taurus, I would prefer one of their revolvers over their semi's...............
