  • Entered the world of the Bullpups

    Anybody else into bullpups?

In the last couple of years I've grown to like the shorter rifles. The center of gravity is farther back and they are good for shooting while standing. I find its easier to hold on target at distance even without a sling. Looked at several Bullpups and settled on either the Steyr AUG or the Tavor. Went with the Tavor and its a good shooter. 27 1/4 inches long including the flash suppressor yet still has a 16 inch barrel. 340 rounds down range so far and not a bobble.

The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

      Very cool congrats!
I want one too! Everytime I go to a shop or show I have to pick them up and check them out. I have been waiting, hoping for the prices to drop some.

Yeah the prices are up there a bit but they have come down about 25% since they were released. It was interesting to hear that IWI built a factory in the USA in order to be able to sell these on the US market.

I'm a big fan of short rifles.
Haven't wanted to go through the SBR paperwork though.
Have considered Steyr AUG or the Tavor as well.
They are nice non SBR alternatives.
          Congratulations!

Would like a further range report + &- of the design. Always fascinated by the design, never shot one. Considered changing stocks and trying one out on my Ruger 10/22.

Just KSG shotty for me. Two SBRs in the works. And the Serbu Super Shorty !!

Paperwork is easy peasy. My wait was about 90 days.

I just wish HK would import the MP7 into the USA. shot one in Germany and oh my gosh it puts almost everything else to shame. Love the AUG but bullpups do have limitations.

Yeah its in Harrisburg. I think they are assembled there with just enough US parts to make them legal. The rifle comes with a P-mag (the 3 parts of the magazine make them legal sell.) IWI states that using a Israel made IWI mag makes them not legal but its not enforced after the consumer purchase. The rule is primarily fof the manufacturing side.

If one changes out the trigger group with something US made then the mag is no issue so they say.

Recoil is lighter than an M4 style AR since it's about 8 pounds unloaded and has a built in shoulder pad. It is butt heavy which feels funny at first but once shouldered the weight disappears and it becomes easy to manage even one handed and holding on target is relatively easy even at range. It carries well too.

It took a while to get use to the mag release. I kept trying to drop it with my trigger finger but "there ain't no button", LOL. The bolt release wasn't really an issue because I still use my same thumb.

The stock trigger from the factory is HEAVY. It requires focus on trigger pull but can be managed. It's glock like in a way for better or worse in that there is some take up and then the break isn't bad. I removed the extra trigger reset spring after the first 3 range trips and it lightened up the trigger a lot so it's not too bad now.

Accuracy is good as all rounds land under the dot which is about as good as my eyes will do without magnification. The stock flip up sights arent bad and co-witness with where I have the red dot. I didn't even try it with a scope yet since thats not really my intended purpose.

I haven't tried any heavy or match ammo yet in the 1:7 twist barrel mostly 55gr. .223 and 5.56 but I tried some 50gr. varmint ammo which shot the tightest group so far. If I bench shoot it groups well as a 16 inch m4. The one thing i had to compensate for was the sight height above the bore axis. I just have to remember to aim 2 inch high at 25 yards, poa at 50 yards, and 2 inches low at 100 yards for more precise work.

                        Thats about it so far.

                            Well the paperwork IS easy...

SBR, ATF Form #1 is employed. Two hundred clams.
Name your trust as the owner. Send papers with money.
                            Wait.
You can call the 800 number for status update... ie, open, check cashed, waiting, being processed, finished, mailed.

Of the 90 days, I waited almost 10 for mailing. Go figure.

When the stamp comes, have the receiver engraved as per ATF instructions.

With an AR, you CAN have the upper engraved, so long as its right side engraving.

Engraving for Johnathan Quincy Smith NFA Firearms Trust would read:

                            J.Q. Smith NFA FA Trust

                            Simple.

Assemble (often just the case of "converting" from pistol to SBR by adding a shoulder stock on an AR)

Go shoot it, draw attention at ranges, etc etc.

I have a 10" and 7-1/2". Both are Noveske uppers with stainless barrels and flaming pigs. Both shoot GREAT!
The shorter one cycles fine with everything, does not bark as bad as one might expect. Flaming pig cuts flame to nada. And the pig is INSIDE the fixed shroud handguard, just pokin' out the end a bit. The 10" is more conventional, has conventional "shorty" type clamshell handguards.

Can't say the actual accuracy, but can hit a clay bird without trying hard at 150 yards, which is about as good as I can see one of those things in the Aimpoint.

Worth the wait... trust me... WORTH the wait.

                              .
Those are my favorite targets. I used to make tell my sons to break the clays on the 100 yard berm with iron sights then put on the scope and tell them i didn't want to see any orange pieces left. It was a blast.
