  • New Toy - Everyone Needs an AK!

On impulse, I decided that I needed to add an AK47 to the fleet, so that I would have a rifle chambered in 7.62X39. So I purchased this Century Arms RAS-47. It is a fairly new model and is 100% American made (AK47 fanboys will probably say that's not necessarily a good thing). Paid around $650.00 from Grab-A-Gun. It came with 2 MagPul P-Mag 30-round magazines. I purchased a couple of 20-round, and a couple of 10-round P-Mags also.

I have around 300 rounds through it over 2 range trips. There have been no malfunctions at all, and the factory iron sights were dead-nuts out of the box. Most of my shooting has been at 25 and 50, and some at 100 yards. My old eyes won't allow me to shoot accurately at long distances (100+yds.) with the small factory sights, so if I decide to keep the gun I will need to add a side mount and optic of some kind.

The AK purists and fanboys have been flaming on this rifle because it's not made in Russia and it has a cast trunion as opposed to a forged one, claiming that catastrophic failures are possible after 5000 rounds or so. I don't pay much attention to that, as Century has sold over 40,000 of these and I haven't been able to find any actual reports of them blowing up in my research. Besides, this gun will only see limited use at the range once in a while.

It's fun to shoot. The 7.62X39 packs a little more of a punch than my AR's chambered in 5.56. The recoil is very modest, in fact not much more than an AR.

I may or may not keep this gun. I'll decide once the novelty wears off. In the meantime, it's a fun and different range toy, and it does attract some attention at the range!

I've shot an AK a couple times, Yugoslav, I think. I didn't like shooting it. To me, the recoil was a lot more than an AR, but YMMV. I'd own one if I had to, but to each his own.

For the price that ammo goes for I have thought about one myself. Congratulations.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

I bought the exact same model as a Christmas present to my self. I have about 500 rounds down range so far, and no complaints. I like it , that's all that matters.
Depending on ammo, ( So far I've only shot cheap Steel cased stuff), I can shoot a 3-5" group at 100 yds. Nothing like an AR, but close enough for me, plus last time there was a run on AR ammo, you could still find the AK ammo.

Using this rifle with wolf ammo for the first time, I thought a cat had taken a piss. The ammonia smell was a little surprising.

I think you're going to love it, I have pondered putting a cheap ( < 100.00) Red dot on it, but the iron sites are good enough for 100 yds, and I don't plan on anything pass that.

            Everyone Absolutely Needs an AK

            I've got an Arsenal (10) SLR-106U pistol.
It's essentially an 100% Bulgarian AK74U "Suchka" (Short Gas System) that runs 5.56 NATO ammo.
Deadly accurate, eats anything I feed it and literally shakes the walls at the range - LOL!

              AK63D here....

Not a huge AK fanboy... just like having one around the place. More of a fun gun than anything, and so far, its 100 percent. Ammo is still relatively cheap for non-reloadable crap that goes bang, but... what the hell... its an AK.

This one's USA milled receiver and Hungarian parts (as I recall). Very tight, still. Probably tighter than it ought to be. The only problem I had was the angled brake (is that a brake or just muzzle attachment?). It wouldn't quite make it to the tightest engagement point, and backing it off almost a full turn left it sorta loose, which perturbed me. I was able to take .0025 off the end of the brake, and it snicked into place just fine at its tightest spot. And... .0025 is about 1/16 of a turn on 1mm pitch threads, just sayin.

Enjoy that shooter, I'm liking the prunes outta mine!

Thats what I was wondering? I guess if the long part is on the bottom it would keep dust down if shooting prone.

I absolutely agree with the AK, 100%!

The AK74 in particular is a fantastic battle rifle platform shooting the high velocity 5.45x39 cartridge.

Here's my Saiga SGL-31 with thousands of accurate reliable rounds on target. This is THE rifle I would grab to save my life. It is a potent proven weapon, and it is very fun to shoot!

What's with that butt "pad"? Looks like it would slice your arm clean off.

Why are you people doing this to me?
Another post a while back MADE me order parts for my first AR build. A gun I have no use for, but as a kid, I did play with Lincoln Logs and erector sets.

                        Now this AK stuff.

                          Congrats on the new rifle!
I've looked those over several times at a local shop and liked what I saw. If I were going to purchase another AK, I'd certainly give one consideration.

                          Me too, mine is Chinese/Romanian/American:

well, ...I guess my 308 Saiga qualifies, so make that two around the place

I like 7.62X39 and have a couple of other rifles chambered in it.
