  • SP5K - Recommended minimum number of mags?

Got a Hk SP5K I'm thinking of using for home defense.
Initially bought four OEM 30 round mags.
    These things aren't cheap!
After sleeping on it, that just doesn't seem like enough?
After developing a nervous twitch, I just ordered four more.
If I have to Bug Out I'm thinking about how many I would carry.

Knowing that you can't have enough mags.
    @ ~70 each I'm looking for a reasonable number.
    What do you guys recommend?

At least double what you might carry if that's your bring along gun. I like 10 or more for handguns. Carry loads and range mags. I don't want to wait until a "national emergency" when the stores are closed to decide that I need more! Like with ammo, you can't have too many... good barter items, too.

      That's my thoughts exactly!
I've got eight, but 10 seems like the Sweet Spot.
I'm looking for some reinforcement to purchase two more - LOL

      Thanks for your input!

Whenever I get something of that genre - like that AK63D or AR's or such, I always go for at least 10 mags.

Some guns have mags that aren't so expensive... one reason I like Glock... plentiful and can be found for $20 or less each. I'm guessing your aren't cheap. I saw the pistol locally for about $2,500 out the door. Shooters sold out and then got some more.

I'm trying to set up my new black P40 as my EDC and still have to figure what sights to put on it. I have at least 14 mags for the old one plus the two that came with the new one and one freebie ordered from Kahr. I finally figured out that one trouble I was having was with the Fiocchi 170-gr FMJTC... that and some new followers that could be causing problems. I need to get all of those mags reliable.

I buy stuff in the chatrooms, too, when I see a deal... here included.

Google and reports here of good deals help, too.

I just checked and found about $70 each plus shipping... yikes!

Ok, I'm totally starting to twitch again - LOL!
Asking on other forums as well, and 10 continues to be the magic number.
Was going to wait for Mas to weigh in...

But I think I've heard enough good advise to go for 10
            Thanks everybody.

Yup, Yup, my G27 has 20 +mags in three calibers and four lengths.
That includes 3 22 round Big Sticks.
Have been thinking about a 9mm or 40 S&W carbine for a while.
And was seriously considering a Kel-Tec SUB-2000 (it runs Glock mags).

But I'm a Hk fan, and with the release of the SP5K...

                  I know, that's the problem.
I start doing the math and get ready to cry - LOL!
                  Ten mags = $700
The cost of a new gun, not just mags.
And I normally put ~$1K limit on the gun!
Plus the SP5K set me back $2,500.
I've never come close to that for any gun.
I'm breaking all my own rules for this Hk
But it's an iconic weapon I'll keep for the rest of my life

And as many have mentioned, including Mas, a potential weapon/mag capacity/ammo ban could very well be imminent
Update: Just ordered 500 more rounds of Federal HST 147 gr @ $24.49 for box of 50.

                  Better safe than sorry
Looks like I'll be living on Top Ramen for a while

I thought I was going to get myself a G43 like Wifey's but the P40 Black attracted me. I bought 3050 rounds of 9mm FMJ and some more .45 FMJ. Now I need to get some more .40.

I would like to get some of that PNW Arms 115-gr 9mm Solid Copper HP... great test at Lucky Gunner's big ammo test. I want some of that but can't find it... about $27 a box of 20, but the penetration and expansion are unbelievable... 13.5" and .69". I want a standard, not +P, for Wifey. The Corbon 115-gr DPX is about the same.

It's not just the number of mags., but also spare springs and followers. If things are bad for a long time (God forbid) you need to keep the mags. you have in good working order!!!!!
What kind of mag. replacement springs do you use? Kahr? Wolf?///

Sounds like I have some shopping to do.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.
