Seems there is a new push by former retired NTSB investigators to reopen the case of the July 17 1996 crash of TWA 800 a 747 taking off from JFK airport on a flight to Paris that blew up and fell into the Atlantic minutes after take off killing all 230 on board...

After 4 years of investigation and hundreds of millions of dollars spent to raise the wreckage off the ocean floor the "official" cause was said to be a spark in the center fuel tank exploded fuel vapors and caused the crash...

There were over 200 eyewitness accounts of a missile being seen rising up from the ocean before the explosion...A few of the witnesses were very experienced and included a retired Viet Nam F-4 Phantom pilot, a retired Naval Officer and a retired Coast Guard Captain who all say the same thing, a missile contrail before the explosion....

There is a documentary on the EPIX network coming out July 17 on the anniversary of the tragedy that shows new evidence that an object traveling at over mach 4 was tracked by radar hitting the plane and the retired NTSB investigators now say all evidence of a missile hitting the aircraft was covered up and that they found no evidence of any mechanical failures of any kind and the cause of the accident was fabricated to look like a center fuel tank electrical explosion...

I followed this story closely at the time and read a couple books about interviews of eye witnesses to the contrail but the FBI refused to even talk to them even after they repeatedly contacted the Bureau wanting to share their information... I'm an aircraft buff and to me the story never stacked up like it was told...For one the FBI got involved from the get go and shoved the NTSB out of the way which was unprecedented in an airline crash investigation...Another very strange thing was the CIA put out an animated video showing how they wanted the mid air explosion to look like and to fit their story of a fuel tank explosion....Why was the CIA involved in this????

This happened during the Clinton administration and my thoughts from the very begining was the Navy was doing aircraft tracking practice off the coast of NY and somehow an unarmed missle was launched and hit TWA 800 and even though it was unarmed and didn't explode it caused the 747 to tear in half and was the cause of the crash....

This accident came too close after the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing and the failed Foreign Policy that caused the tragic events in Mogadishu with the Black Hawk down diaster along with Bill not being able to let go of Monica's ears under his Oval Office desk so at that point in time a probable Navy screw up taking out an airliner would have been too much for Ole Slick Willie to deal with so it was time for a good old fashoned cover up...Why does the Government continue to lie to us and think the public doesn't need to know the truth???....Hopefully this new documentary will reopen the investigation and find the REAL cause of the crash and death of 230 passengers on the doomed flight....My guess is that Hillary will probably say "At this point what difference does it make anyway"..............

My Navy pride won't let me jump on the friendly fire/accidental launch bandwagon. I agree that this was fishy from day 1, but just can't buy that it was an SM-2. I was still active duty & working in CIC when TWA800 came down, so I can confidently say that the safety controls in place during exercises were layered in such a way that you just don't get negligent discharges on missiles.

I hope you're right DK and it wasn't anything to do with our Navy...The idea was bounced around that it might have been a terriorist attack from a small fast boat using shoulder fired stinger type missiles but that kind of washed out because the plane was at too high an altitude for a simple shoulder weapon to take it down and it would have had to be a much longer range ship mounted missile to do it...

I could accept a Navy accident being the cause because training accidents do happen from time to time and the Navy is very quick to try and cover its ars (see USS Iowa accident) so if that was the case just say so but if it was a terriorist attack using a weapon of that capability getting that close to JFK airport without us knowing about it then heads should have rolled and the Government shouldn't have tried to sham wow the public with a cocamamy story about a center fuel tank explosion that had never happened before or since the TWA 800 crash to any other 747 in any airline fleet....

I don't buy the conspiracy theory on this. Too many people, too many investigating agencies, too much science and evidence on the side of "an accident", to be a cover up. We don't like to think that our planes simply fall apart or crash, but sometimes they do.

Just another group trying to make some money off of other people's misfortune. Nothing to see here... move along.

Thank goodness for whistleblowers, retired or not. Seems to be one of the best ways to get the truth out these days.

As I recall, there were major naval exercises going on off-shore at the time. Valuable and multiple witness statements about the missile contrail before explosion. CIA and FBI usurping NTSB authority. Yep, must have been a fuel tank spark. Nothing to see here, move along.

Yes, "major naval exercises" were taking place -- but in the VaCapes OpArea. I was there. We were preparing for our Med deployment.

The only assets in the crash area were a P-3, the Normandy and SubGru2. The P-3 was an airborne asset under control of Normandy for ASW training against SubGru2. Due to the nature of the exercises, AAW systems would not have been in a state for launch.

I'm thinking the whole thing was caused by an anti Muslim video and since it was an election year and Billy C. couldn't afford another terriorist attack messing with his campaign so close to the November elections that he had the whole thing covered up in an elaborate scheme involing the FBI and the CIA...

It was either that or there was someone onboard the plane the Clintons wanted gone...(See Ron Brown).....wouldn't be the first time Slick and the Hildabeast used a plane crash to get rid of an enemy then covered it up....

Seems this kind of cover up is a common theme with the Democrats in an election year using lies to cover up a terriorist attack that might get in the way of their campaign for re election ....(See Benghazi)...

I first thought that a shoulder fired stinger missile brought the plane down, but no one took credit for it. A Navy nuke sub took out a Japanese research vessel, so it could have been a Navel accident. Damn sure wouldn't have been the first Navel accident.

Making a profit from the misfortune and death of other people is one of the lowest, most common ways to make a living. I put these clowns in the same category as the 9/11 conspiracy nut cases. "Eye witnesses" saw a missile hit the Pentagon then too. They were also wrong.

They'd have at least some credibility had they spoken up 18 years ago, prior to sucking at the government teat for their comforts and salaries all this time. Next thing... Oliver Stone will make another crap filled movie like JFK. There's money to be made lads. Jump on the wagon.

I think somebody knows the real story but we won't ever hear it. Spinmasters are good at what they do.
But there is one thing that's puzzled me about the Pentagon on 9/11 where's the strewn luggage whenever a commercial plain crashes, the area looks like a yard sale scattered all over the place. I remember fire fighters standing on manicured green lawns with their firehoses but no debris field, no tail section, no wings, nothin'. Of course that was a little corner screen the big picture focus was on the trade center....
