    License Plate Readers

The system has been around for a bit. My buddy does Repo and he has it on his truck. It scans every plate # he drives by and puts it into a data base of where it was seen. Then if he gets a repo all he has to do is search for the plate #. Local PDs are using the same programs and the database is linked together.

Small towns where there's nothing else going on sit a car at their main intersection just scanning a way. like fishing in a stocked pond on opening day..... You get a bite every time!
You have not had any privacy in years.

One could make a habit of backing into parking places so the reader can't see your plate.

John that only works if the car is parked. Dept's that have them are scanning about 10,000+ plates per day per patrol car. For vehicles that are stolen/amber alert/silver alert they are invaluable. Also in OK state law requires that the information not be retained. So the tage number is scanned/run/deleted if not stolen etc.

I have no problems with them as the courts and the Founding Fathers were pretty clear that when in the public domain you have NO expectation of privacy. Privacy really only was protected in what is referred to as special places. In public WAS NOT one of the special places.

While it doesn't bother me for my purpose, it does niggle at me about the 4th amendment. Also, the police may tell you it's no big thing, but get a few dozen volunteers to follow patrol cars around and call in their location to a local radio stations and you'll find them choosing to disagree with their own logic. After all, they are employees of the citizenry so they should not care if the citizenry knows the location of the citizenry's patrol cars, right? Well, they do.

Right...and point a video cam at them and watch them demand you stop videoing them. There are numerous instances on youtube of citizens being arrested for lawfully videoing the police. One woman was on her front lawn in her pajamas videoing a traffic stop in front of her house and was arrested and taken to jail when she refused to stop taking video.

The cops and I have come to an agreement. I don't bother the police and they don't bother me. It's worked out quite well for 67 years.

In Florida we had a stink about whether it was legal to signal other drivers about speed traps down the road. It interferes with the revenue collection system.

I don't much like it but they have been doing it for years and now with GPS and systems like OnStar and smartphones if you use any of these devices they can track you anywhere....I also don't much care for so called sobriety license check point stops becaues I don't drink and drive so why should I have to be stopped and show my papers?

I suppose all this changes if you think that the drunk guy they have in the back seat of the patrol car when you went through the DUI checkpoint may have been the same one who would have creamed you later on down the road or if your car was stolen from the mall parking lot and the Police cars license plate reader found it an hour later and you got your car back without it being stripped then it's a good thing, just matters how you look at something...

At the check points the police also find people driving on suspended licences with wants and warrants and drugs. I don't have a problem with the stops as long as the stops are brief and the police are polite and respectful. A few moments of inconvenience may save lives.

Precisley. SCOTUS has ruled that if the cars stopped are ina consistent pattern, such as every car or every third car etc there is NO infringement. Never forget driving is a privilege granted by the state and NOT A RIGHT guaranteed by the Consittution.
