MD_Vet -- I'm not sure if you're a Maryland veteran, a Maryland veterinarian or a Medical Doctor veteran. Either way, thanks for pointing out that this is a double post. The mods should feel free to delete mine in favor of the first one.
For those who would suggest that Reason.com is distorting the facts to sensationalize the issue, I'd recommend getting more familiar with Reason.com. It's a very responsible outfit and is pretty even-handed about pointing out the failures of Democrats and Republicans.

Re: The Growing Police State
I respect you, Longitude Zero. You are a stand up guy for whom I would like to buy a beer for all the cr@p you've surely had to go through. And your statement is true, it was forced upon you. It would have been stupid for departments not to take all the goodies the Feds were giving them.Originally posted by Longitude Zero View PostMC1911 the vast majority of the militirization was forced upon us by the actions of the criminal elemement.
However, the problem is when the police/military (politary) doesn't use their new toys against the criminal element, but against ordinary citizens in their homes doing ordinary business. In violation of the Constitution. Boston bombers search comes to mind as a good example. Our once free country is quickly becoming like countries we fought to free. The military/police state would be good evidence to the truth of that statement."I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

If you look for the bad in the world you are sure to find it. There was only one perfect man and he was crucified upon a cross. For every bad cop there are a thousand good cops. I've never met a police officer who didn't treat me with the utmost respect. Perhaps that because I always treated them with the utmost respect. Re: The Growing Police State
I think we all know a few bad apples spoil the bunch, and we are grateful to our brave LEOs who put their butts on the line every day, but... We, the people, grow weary of the men in blue who act without honor, abuse their power, and fabricate charges to intimidate the very people they are supposed to be serving and protecting. Our challenge is to not lose perspective, as you so quite rightly brought to our attention.Originally posted by muggsy View PostIf you look for the bad in the world you are sure to find it. You see the bad apples at all levels. However much of what is seen on the internet is not abusive police powers but the cold hard facts of doing the job. Some of what is seen on the net is abusive however but nowhere near what the Chicken Little crowd would have us beleive.
As a citizen it disgusts me that people are so quick to relinquish there esential liberty for a temporary and fleeting illusion of safety. As a pragmatic man it would be silly of me as a representative of the "G" not to take advantage of all the tools the citizens are willing to give.Wake Up...Grow Up...Show Up...Sit Up...Shut Up...Listen Up

...that said, there is a point where you can say no, as well. Pragmatism isn't all that it is cut out to be.Originally posted by Longitude Zero View PostYou see the bad apples at all levels. Oh, and I'm not so sure about the willing to give part. I'd say there's a good amount of coercion at work. Most at the point (or threat) of a gun or prison."I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

Not completely....
I watched my locals arrest a kid that was being beat up by an adult and when I stepped in as a witness for the kid the cops said they did not care that they would arrest all and let the judge "judge sort it out".....what a bunch of crap....they did not even care who was at fault. To me that is abuse of power. I saw the whole thing....the kid flipped off the trucker for almost running him over and the trucker kicked the crap out of the kid."Life Member NRA"

I see in Alfonse's link, another man was killed in a drug raid on the wrong house, and in another wrong house raid, they shot Military Veteran's dogs. How stupid do you have to be to raid the wrong house? There are usually quite a few officers participating in these drug raids, you'd think maybe one would check they got the right address? No time to do that I guess, when they have innocent people and dogs to kill. Some officers will probably get a paid leave of absence, and no real punishment for murdering an innocent person. I think it's time we started charging them with murder when their reckless acts end up killing someone. Manslaughter at least. Now I know that everyone makes mistakes, but it's a little more drastic than just a mistake, when the police kill an innocent. As long as they keep getting away with these atrocities, nothing is going to change. And it's not just the cop that needs to be disciplined, but everyone involved in getting them to the wrong address. Now y'all may say I'm a cop hater, I'm not. I've never had anything except good relations with the police. I just think that some of them are getting a little too big for their britches, and need to be relieved of their duties until they can prove they can do the job. And I know when you go acting like a jerk, sometimes you get what you deserve. I got no problem with that. But when knowing your rights, causes you to be seen and treated as a jerk, then I DO have a problem with it.
I just ran across this article from some internet rag called "Natural News" about the militarization of police departments (which they see as a big part of the problem), and some of the things that have been going on: http://www.naturalnews.com/041072_mi..._training.html
Oh geez, here is another one, man shot dead for watering a lawn with a "gun" shaped nozzle: http://www.realfarmacy.com/man-shot-...eighbors-lawn/ No "drop the weapon" or "put your hands in the air" just bang bang bang, and another man dead.Last edited by TheTman; 07-06-2013, 05:16 PM.Tom
