I generally agree with you on this and always appreciate your straight forwardness and consistency in views.

The only thing I do not agree with you on is if they served our country they do deserve veteran benefits if eligible.
I also do not agree with the newest rage in youth activity which is beat the homeless(sometimes to death) and or light them on fire for entertainment.
Thanks and I feel the same on your views. Diversity makes for a much better conversation. We had an issue in my city with the staging of Bum Fights. Fortunately the perpetrators were identified, caught, prosecuted, and incarcerated.

My primary focus on the issue is best summed up by:

“I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”

Many argue that Reagan was the instrument that contributed to the closing of mental institutions and cause a rise in the mentally ill homeless which has propagated on to this day.

Here is a read to further explain this.

IMHO and historically Reagan is only very minimally to blame. The bleeding hearts and family members of the mental patients that were properly institutionalized/warehoused along with the ACLU are mostly to blame.

I had friends with relatives in the system. Once the doors were thrown open and they became burdens upon that state far in excess of what they cost before. Many became homeless and a huge number committed heinous criminal acts and are now convicts. Frankly we should have kept them warehoused as it was cheaper than prison.

the homeless by "choice" beg for money, beg for food, beg for work, sleep in public, urinate and defecate in public..... all are crimes; but just occupying space (other than loitering or trespassing) should not be a crime.

It was the psychiatrist professionals and ACLU in California beginning in the early '60s that pressured their legislature to stop involuntary commitments and to empty out their state mental institutions. The legislature bowed to the professionals' agenda, passed the legislation....and Reagan signed it.

Read up on why the California psychiatrists persuaded their state politicians to take that course. I did, and it's very revealing of the truth about this topic.

It's another case of liberals refusing to take responsibility for their actions and to blame the bad results on a republican - just like they've done with the mortgage/banking meltdown in 2008 & blaming George Bush (who had almost nothing to do with that financial crisis and ensuing Great Recession).

Of course many liberal pundits & bloggers perpetuate the myth that "Reagan created our homeless problem". That's just a damned lie.

I did read what you were referring to and there seems to be some division on the responsible party. Actually I think it was a win win at the time between the ACLU/Libs wanting stop the involuntary holding of the mentally ill as you mentioned and Reagan seeing this as an opportunity to allocate funds into other more business friendly projects. The results in not good no matter who wanted this and thus the blame game.

Well of course Reagan saw the opportunity to transfer a considerable sum of state expenditures to other pet projects, but the California psychiatrists' state organization was adamant that they could treat most of the released mentally ill with their new drugs. Reagan deferred to their professional expertise.

Naturally, many liberal bloggers & pundits have distorted the true course of events just to slam the despised Reagan. He was hated to a serious degree by the liberal establishment in the '80s, and that has continued to the present time.

And not the worm has turned. Many states are looking to ADD mental health beds for treatment. They should have kept the beds they once had.

I agree with you. I was posting an alt view to show how things are shades of gray.

Don't believe everything you read, especially if it comes from a liberal source. It was the ACLU that put mental patients on the street.

I don't recall, I know he was in the San Antonio area, and may have passed on years ago. I learned of him in an English class I was taking. I have since thrown my notes out. I'll keep looking though.
