They serve for the love of freedom and their country, Chief. They don't serve the president.

For some, it's the best choice they have. Join the Military and learn to kill and possibly a useful trade for civilian life, or join a gang and learn to kill. I'd rather have them killing foreigners than gang banging.

I am not so sure one can make the blanket statement that the military does not serve the president nor can one say he does with 100% accuracy.

The Constitution (Article II, section 2) specifies that “The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several states, when called into the actual Service of the United States.”
In fact the constitution is a bit vague under conditions that the president might be in control and was further tightened up with the War Powers ACT. So to say yes or no without some wiggle room is reaching.

                This.

Also, keep in mind that for the vast majority of service men and women, the president is not their direct boss, just as most of those who work for Microsoft do not work directly for Bill Gates.

I had many outstanding supervisors during my time in the military, and I would hope many out there would view their time under my leadership in the same favorable light.

I propose that the better question would be why would anyone want to serve a country full of people who would elect such a piece of human excrement.

Of course not all military and I say this with some sadness are people devoted to military for military sake. For some it beats welfare and handouts.

I don't say this to take a single thing away from those who serve with honor and pride.

Every organization in every level has a percentage of free loaders.

The Commander in Chief (I use that term extremely loosely) is a perfect example.

But if Bill Gates walked up to you and said "pack up your stuff, you are no longer needed", I would think that this directive, is as definitive if not more so, than coming from your supervisor. Therefore, by the fact that sheet flows downstream, Gates is the head kahuna as is the president?

I feel many give their life signed blank check to the country for this portion of the statement given plus add in a dash of "for duty, honor, friends and family".

It was similar circumstances back when I went in. Jimmy Carter was the sitting president and I thought even then that he would hold the title "the worst president" for a long long time, but I still served. I certainly did not serve because of him.

The current president has managed to grab that title away from Carter in short order and with gusto.

The fact he is the current sitting president does nothing to diminish the integrity of the decision that most of the folks who have joined since 2008 - before and after. For many the first paragraph overrides who the president is because the country is about so much more than any single president.
"The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it."
