I guess I just don't understand what got Jesse in a snit unless he didn't have any other made up crisis to stick his nose in....All Phil said was that the Black folks he grew up around seemed to be happy and he got along with them fine....God forbid people be happy and content and get along....

I was 10 when Martin Luther King died and at the time my best friend in the world was Johnny Watts....Johnny's dad owned the transmission shop two doors down from my dad's Service Station and after school his mom we called Ms. Bunn would pick us up and we would go to Johnny's house and I would stay until my Dad would pick me up....

Ms. Bunn was the greatest cook in the world and a wonderful women and mother to both of us...Johnny and I had the time of our lives playing baseball, building forts, damming up the creek and just being kids....I never gave much thought to the fact that Johnny was Black and he didn't seem to notice I was White, we just had fun together....Damn shame grownups had to come along and mess things up....Sometimes I think if kids ran the world it would be a much better place....

Getsome, that's a cool story about you and your black friend.
I have a black friend I've known over 40 years, and we are like brothers.
He's a good man, a Deacon in his church, and the Children's Pastor, and is married with two fine daughters. He says I saved his life one time, I kind of doubt it, but he really believes it. I called him Christmas morning to wish him Merry Christmas, and he sounded very weird, so I asked him what's up, you don't sound right, and he said on the night before on Christmas Eve, his girlfriend dumped him, and he was sitting there with his dad's shotgun trying to work up the nerve to pull the trigger. (I doubt he really would have pulled the trigger, which is why I say I doubt I saved his life). I said give me 15 minutes and I'll be there. I called my folks and asked if I could bring a guest out for Christmas Dinner, and she said ok, so I went by an got AD and we went out to my folks. I hadn't warned them I was bringing a black friend, but they didn't bat an eye, and welcomed him in like he was part of the family. I let mom in on what happened, and she mothered AD to death that day, giving him lots of attention, making sure he got plenty to eat, and even took one of my gifts and re-labeled it and so he had something under the tree. The only one that had an issue was a pretty bigoted uncle that was mad that we let a "n*gger" (his word, not mine) celebrate with us, but he was told he could leave if he didn't like it. AD left in a lot better mood and we went back to my house and hung out the rest of the afternoon and evening. And knocked back some beers and listened to some music and had our own little party. Anyway, that kind of cemented the bond between us, and we've been best friends every since. He also dearly loved my parents after that, and spent many hours at the hospital with us while Dad was dying. It must have really meant something to him, as he showed up at my door several Christmases ago, with a brand new 60th Anniversary Fender Jazz Bass, with the hard sided Fender case. He presented it to me, and said if it wasn't for me, he most likely wouldn't be here today, and the Bass was to show me how much that day long ago meant to him. I told him he didn't need to do that, but he had bought 2 other guitars, and they gave him a good deal on the Bass, so he got it too. That is one of my favorite Christmas stories. Even if he hadn't gave me the Bass.
Just an example of it's what is inside a person that counts, not what he looks like on the outside.
