TheTman ANY aircraft can be brought down with a properly place 50BMG. However NOBODY on this board is that good a shot PERIOD. Again let me throw some badly needed light upon a darkened corner, in modern day the only military plane that can take a beating and keep on fighting is the A-10. check it out if you do not understand.

I'm thinking they meant more of an anti-aircraft battery using .50 caliber guns when engaging surface targets, not someone shooting a Barrett at it. The one talking about it being too easy to shoot down, says that's why it hasn't been deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan. I say it's because those countries have nothing to send up to fight with it, and many other aircraft are better suited for providing ground support if needed. One articles says the F-22 has one 20mm caliber M61A2 cannon, and carries 480 rounds for it (rate of fire is 100 rounds/second). Plus 8 missiles. Other goodies can be hung from 4 hard points on the wing, when stealth mode is not necessary.Tom

Radio controllers can be jammed. The satellites can be destroyed, as can be the GPS network. Data streams can be spoofed, too.
A pilot with the proper sensors and closed cockpit can venture into EMP-filled environments. We trained in the B52's to penetrate low-level to use terrain masking to avoid radar. We trained to fly with a closed cockpit from takeoff and had radar, FLIR, and Low-Light TV, as well as radar altimeters and intense terrain study to penetrate Soviet airspace and sow EMP-producing devices among their defenses and infrastructure.
We also had an Electronic Warfare Officer with plenty of sensors to warn us of electronic defenses as well as active transmitters and chaff to frustrate their radar.
Computers and robotics can aid, but not replace eyes in the cockpit in all scenarios. Our unmanned drones are NOT going up against sophisticated Soviet technology.
Believe me, if we try to take on anyone with advanced technology, they will target the satellites and the little trailers with the joystick controllers sitting outside the combat zone.

In all seriousness, in my opiinion the F-35 is a complete waste of US funds devoted to the combined forces Euro-Fighter. We've gone back to F-5 (T-38) days. That's actually an insult to the Talon, which was a great nimble little aircraft.
The 35's huge claim to fame is it's AoA, but what actual improvement over our present force with a substandard thrust to weight ratio ?.. Zip. Wasted resources.
Breaks the heart to she the F-22 shot down so early, but we don't have the funds availabe to buy into superior national defense. Today we need to get used to the big bohica.
We have had a history though of over engineering and ending up with big turkeys.
I like to look at the ant and the elephant analogy. Like the battle of Kursk. While the Germans had the superior equipment, a King Tiger getting swammed by a 10:1 ratio of T-34's didn't work out too well for der fuhrer.
Either we fund the F-22 or flood the skies with Falcon's & Hornet's and get the Gomers.USN ~ Retired

Not yet but one day it will be the norm. If the trailer with the joysticks is in the USA targeting them will be fruitless.Wake Up...Grow Up...Show Up...Sit Up...Shut Up...Listen Up

The military procurement process requires the project manager to identify the benefits to the congressional delegations of as many States as possible in order to get enough votes to pass Congress. It's Pork, with a capital P, and it means jobs in that State (or better District) tied to this wizzbang program. So the focus is not "build the most capable" but "build the one that will pass Congress".
