funny I have a concierge doctor I pay for every month whether I see him or not for the little stuff AND a catastrophic plan for when the SHTF (like prostate cancer ect). I am covered AND I save money compared to the $ of the best ACA plan..... go figure. The ACA doesn't offer much more than what was out there before. The ONLY thing I like is that people with pre existing conditions can get coverage. Granted that risk is passed on to all of us, but I do live in a society and am willing to accept that fact.

Pre-Existing I have some sympathy. Except no car for those whose own personal choices damaged their health. The folks I have ZERO sympathy for are the ones who by their own behavior continue to damage their health and expect us to pay for their transgressions. If you do not stop smoking NO cancer or lung care for you. If you are fat and continue to stuff your face and do not lose weight you get no care at all since you are damaging all of your bodies symptoms. I only help those that do not make their situation worse and help themselves. Everybody else is crap outta luck.Wake Up...Grow Up...Show Up...Sit Up...Shut Up...Listen Up

I understand your reasoning but very hard to implement in a practical manner. OIWs who determines ideal weight? Will there be random testing for carcinogens in your system? Is alcohol allowed? How much is too much. Are you guilty and denied coverage until proven innocent. A slippery slope indeed.Originally posted by Longitude Zero View PostPre-Existing I have some sympathy. knkali it is. It is similar to the arguments as to just how much medical care a person should be given when their own illegal/ignorant/stupid behavior injures them. I say very little beyond basic life support. Certainly not extraordinary all out medical care. Stupid choices should have permanent consequences.Wake Up...Grow Up...Show Up...Sit Up...Shut Up...Listen Up

This thing is sure turning out to be a mess alright...I think it was designed to fail and they knew going in that the young healthy kids would rather pay the fine than spend everything they make on healthcare payments to be redistributed to the old sicker folks....Obama had in mind a European Socialist single payer system from the get go and if Hillary gets elected then you can bet the bus thats what will happen....
If the Republicans can somehow get elected and overturn ACA it will still be a mess because the insurance companies bought into ACA hook line and sinker and why not? They were guaranteed a profit due to that little provision writen into the law called "Risk Corridors" that Nancy Pelosi said we would find out about after they passed it...If the insurance companies have to go back to square one and start all over again from scratch you can bet they won't be offering the same policy prices as before and many who lost insurance or have a serious illness wont be able to buy insurance at any price...
Sorry but there is no humor in Ovomitcare nor will they be in Hillcare...." An armed society is a polite society".... Robert A. Heinlein

Risk corridors are a good thing IF you are going to have or attempt to have an ACA. Without RCs the ACA would never materialize---which is a good thing but not reality. RCs exist in Medicare already and are nothing new.
As you said, when ACA was drafted, insurers had no way of knowing who was going to sign up. Unhealthy people could out number YOUNG healthy people signing up because YOUNG healthy people might absorb the fine for not signing up rather than pay all their wages for health care they feel they are not going to need. This will cause the insurer to price their premiums high to cover the possibility of having to pay a large amount in paid claims relative to a small amount of premiums received and consequently cause ALL people to avoid buying into any plan altogether due to high priced plans. RCs are a way for the federal government to give security to insurers in a new market by sharing the risks of all exchange carriers. RCs limit the risk in a new market which will entice insurers to participate in the ACA in the first place, and to eventually price rates competitively, through competition, which hopefully results in lower plan prices. Without RCs the ACA would be DOA before it ever got started. RCs are supposed to be temporary and end sometime in 2015 or 2016 after insurers have sufficiently tested the waters. You and I know that this will not be temporary. The insurers will constantly go to the flowing teat and once that easy money is threated to be discontinued, the already hooked sheep will, in fear, beg the G to continue the flow. So we will constantly be putting money into this abortion. Supposedly, not all insurers will be eligible to collect fed money from RCs. Some insurers will end up paying into the RC program, some wont. It depends on where their claims paid amount is relative to their premium intake amount. Something like + or - 3%. However, you and I know that through creative accounting all insurers will receive money and you and I will subsidize this experiment forever.
In short, through RCs the G created a market and then hopes to let "the Free Market" take over and all will work itself out. We all know that this paradigm is ridiculous. Sounds good on paper but the reality is that the insurers do not have to perform to garner your business as long as the G' teat is subsidizing them. The insurers have the insured over a barrel and will continue to extract money without providing services by holding the mere promise of a healthcare system at ransom. So we are really sponsoring an inherently inefficient single party payment system with the insurers being saprophytic middle men.Last edited by knkali; 02-25-2014, 10:02 PM.I am the Living Man
