It’s THE QUESTION that can now be seriously considered… Is the presumptive front-runner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination in treacherous and potentially fatal political quicksand? Has Hillary’s political career been hijacked by fresh eruptions in the Benghazi scandal?
What difference, at this point, does this all make? Well….
Consider: The House appears certain to approve a Select Committee to investigate the attack that took the life of our ambassador to Libya, a committee with extraordinary powers to get to the bottom of the Benghazi bungle, a committee with SC Congressman Trey “Bulldog” Gowdy at the helm. Hillary’s successor, current Secretary of State John Kerry, is being subpoenaed to appear before Darrel Issa’s Oversight Committee. Newly released White House and State Department emails/talking points suggest a conspiratorial coverup of early intel/knowledge about the attack that left four Americans dead – a coverup designed to protect President Obama and then Secretary of State Clinton.
And then there are the increasingly weak, bizarre, comical and tormented defenses of the Administration and the Clinton-at-State era that fact-challenged Dems are serving up — high-profile Dems including the WH spokes-kid Jay “Jaybird” Carney.
You can just feel the “climate change” around the Benghazi issue. There is a very palpable sense of significant “warming” here – the heat is being turned up, and Democrat political operatives, hacks and hooligans are beginning to squirm.
Why, even news outlets other than Fox News are being forced to offer coverage, begrudging as it might be. The winds of a changed Benghazi environment are indeed starting to pick up.
On the direct question of Hillary Clinton’s (damaged/destroyed) political future…
A pivotal article/analysis appears in National Journal — a piece entitled “BENGHAZI WILL NEVER GO AWAY: As much as she would like to escape the attack’s long shadow, it will continue to dog Hillary Clinton.” And this dog do hunt.
This intriguing article discusses social media attention surrounding both Benghazi and Clinton. What? Social media buzz? Yes, indeed. Here are the key excerpts that point to a real and lasting problem for the would-be presidential contender:
Someone tweets about Benghazi every 12 seconds. Not every 12 days or every 12 minutes, but every 12 seconds.
Over the past month, that’s added up to more than 200,000 tweets, according to the social-media tracking firm Topsy. And while mentions of the attack on the American compound in Libya soared in the past few days thanks to new revelations about the government’s handling of the incident, Benghazi still scores about 5,000 tweets per day during the long periods between fresh news developments.
Notably, that’s about the same number of tweets as Hillary Clinton gets on most days. In fact, over the past 30 days, Benghazi edged out Clinton on Twitter, earning 219,325 mentions to Clinton’s 219,163 (as of the end of the workday Thursday.)
If this means anything, it’s that the controversy is not fading with time. It remains something—perhaps the biggest thing—that Clinton and her team will have to deal with, should she decide to run for president, whether she wants to or not.
So, mark this date on your political calendar. And see if this reporter’s instincts prove correct. Has Benghazi now claimed a fifth victim?
