  • Prejudices vs. Racism

A currently active discussion has disagreements and the word racism is being thrown out. Maybe it racism, maybe it is prejudices. I personally feel there is a big difference.
What is the difference between having prejudices and being racist?

Having prejudices is having preconceived notions or ideas about something or someone, which are not consistent with facts. Racism is just pure hate/dislike for someone, with no regard of any thought, notion, idea, etc. except for their race.

I tend toward this definition of prejudice without reference to factual or not - any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.

A guy I used to work with was called a racist because he arrested a POS more than a few times..His response to that was "i can"t be racist, I hate everyone.." I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants...And you know what, he never had an issue with that person again after that!!

Prejudice is e.g. women being discriminated against for taking jobs traditionally held by men in the workplace. Racism is e.g. minority women being discriminated against for taking jobs traditionally held by non-minority men in the workplace. Racism is discrimination towards others because of their race.

So..the angry people have a prejudice towards whites when they say whites did something to them because they were black.

My take on it is a little different. And sticking to race for the purposes of this discussion.
A prejudice is a feeling or opinion a person has about a specific race. Racism is acting on those prejudices.

well this can of worms is open now, let's have some fun. what is it called when you have an experienced based opinion? how many similar experiences does it take to form an opinion? are you prejudiced or just aware of the circumstances(situational awareness)? what does the law say about a reasonable person having a reasonable expectation? what does the law say about unreasonable people?

Not really. 2.4 million stop and frisks lead to 150000 arrests lead to 75000 convictions... I think I missed the point as it applies to this thread.
