Do you think maybe we have done the same to them? I hack you, you hack me which leaves neither of us with the upper hand. The term Cold War comes to mind.

The way things are, I wouldn't be surprised if FN Obama had the viruses planted.

Sounds similar to what was done to bring down the Iranian enrichment centrifuges.

Hmm, maybe Israel planted them here. Good life insurance for them.

We should mandate manual back-up systems for just such an emergency. That would negate a hack attack.

If they know about it, it seems they could "fix" it...

The Iranian hack was very specific about what type of controls it attacked. This sounds a bit broader. I run these types of systems for my job and this is nothing new. There is a reason the government systems have stopped using certain protocols that 90% of the commercial customers use.

I heard on a talk radio program that if 7 key Electrical Distribution Stations were taken down, that much of the USA would have no power for up to 18 months. The govt. knows about it, but has taken no steps to have backup transformers and equipment to replace any that might be destroyed. And many of the parts are from foreign sources like Germany, that may or may not be able or willing to provide the needed parts. This is another of those things that makes you wonder what goes on in D.C. Makes you wonder if they are intentionally wanting us to have a major catastrophe. Some say that up to 90% of the population could perish without power for that length of time. Starvation, dehydration, disease, no heat, lack of ability to get medical attention, riots and other violence are some of the biggest concerns.

Makes you wonder who's holding whom hostage. Are we held hostage to the government's lack of preparedness? Just keep electing who we tell you to and nobody gets hurt.

I doubt those numbers. However, a well placed shape charge could take out the Internet for half of the U.S.....

That's sort of true, but not really (this from a 30-year I.T. guy). I don't know where you're getting your information, but there are hubs in Reston VA and other locations that are very heavily utilized but the whole purpose of the IP routing protocols the Internet is dependent upon, originally developed by DARPA under DoD funding, was to create resilience against multiple nuclear attacks. There are built-in convergence operations that occur in remaining routers that "self-heal" around concentration point failures, and things have gotten far, far, far more resilient since the Internet became commercially viable - AT&T, MCI and the rest know just how important resiliency is to their profitability, and have built in multiple layers of redundancy in their fabrics. If you want to bring down the internet, don't use a shaped charge - hack the convergence protocols, or even better, show Kim Kardashian's ass on a web site.
