I was going to say, I have seen the curvature of the earth there as well. You can actually see the horizon bend. Another place is at the beach around SF on a sunny day, but because the water reflects light it is harder to see there. At night you can watch the ships disappear as they head off into the horizon, because normally at night they are using running lights and are much easier to see than daytime. I don't know if Tman's hat will be effective at the Great Salt Lakes though?

Been to the salt flats, It ain't flat!!
Riddle me this gents, IF the tinfoil folks even though they are locked up in mom's basement, are correct, Just what the heck could you do about it??????????

Well I watched several of the videos and read a few articles about the "Flat Earth Society" and I never knew there were so many people out there who think the world is flat and the moon and sun revolve around a toy top shaped earth from only 4000 miles away.......Wow......It takes all kinds I guess but I hope they aren't allowed to vote....

That would explain why so many believe in global warming.Originally posted by getsome View PostWell I watched several of the videos and read a few articles about the "Flat Earth Society" and I never knew there were so many people out there who think the world is flat and the moon and sun revolve around a toy top shaped earth from only 4000 miles away.......Wow......It takes all kinds I guess but I hope they aren't allowed to vote....

There's so gosh durned many of us, who'd miss a couple million people.

... And my bad on the bong comment. It was meant in jest, and certainly no statement in regards to your character. I'm sorry.Originally posted by TheTman View PostI apologize if I sounded angry and lashed out at some folks. This was to me a light hearted topic that I hoped we could have some fun with, but when some of the comments were more or less personal attacks, I guess I got a little peeved. The you need to put the bong down, and I see you are from Kansas, that explains things.... well I just took them the wrong way. It's been a long day, and I should have waited until tomorrow to check in. I apologize for getting personal with people, and will refrain from that behavior in the future.
I thought maybe with all the horrible crap going down that we might have some fun with this. And get away from the serious stuff for a bit. It's kind of a silly topic, but I was amazed at all the answers they had for some tough questions, that I thought maybe we could come up with something to really stump them. I'm playing devil's advocate here. Taking the flat earth side. I've got to get some sleep, I'll check back tomorrow.

Ovalnut, Tim,
I'm sorry I was pissy about your comment. I had a long day and was coming down with something and wasn't in a very good mood. I should have known it was all in fun, but I just was in a bad mood I guess. I apologize for my attitude. I did spend most of this week sick in bed, so something was going on with me.Tom

Antarctica forms the edge, and who goes there? Only a few scientific expeditions. And at some point supposedly you come to a wall that goes up for miles. Even those scientific expeditions are only allowed to a certain point from "South Pole". So how did Roald Amundsen supposedly make it to the South Pole, and how did he know when he found it?
I find it strange that most countries can't agree on much of anything, yet over 50 have signed on to the treaty to keep Antarctica a continent open to all nations, and owned by none?
I'm looking for the question these guys can't answer. The question that stumps all of them. We have some intelligent people here, and we should be able to come up with a question the flat earthers cannot answer.
The Bonneville salt flats may not be flat. Are things going over the horizon, or just disappearing into the vanishing point? One needs to take a telescope and see if they can see the cars at the other end of the speed course.
Even the flattest section of Earth may have a curve in it, That's why they use water for so many of their experiments, since water always seeks it's flatness in any container you put it in, from a bucket to a lake to a bay.Tom

The cars are clearly going over the horizon, it happens too quickly to just get beyond seeing distance. Binoculars and spotting scopes are common too.
There's also a big truck class (fun to watch) they are obviously much taller so you can see them a little longer.
Last time I was there they had to shut them down, they were blowing front tires at over 200 miles an hour, made a hell of a mess and took long to clean up. Nobody hurt but a couple messed up very nice tractors.
Sure they probably have better tires by now.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

Maybe it's all an illusion? Maybe this is someones virtual reality game? Maybe a lot of things. But I'm going with the round earth for now.Originally posted by TheTman View Post

Water does not technically seek a level regardless of its container. Water actually is drawn straight down toward the center of the earth, which is round. Water conforms to the sides and bottom of the container within which it is contained, yet the top surface is rounded to an arc which matches the curvature of the earth. You can plainly see this curve across the top of water when you are in a boat on the ocean or on a large lake. The surface of the water is not flat.
