WASHINGTON, March 26 (Reuters) - Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump told the New York Times he would consider stopping U.S. oil purchases from Saudi Arabia unless the Saudi government provide troops to fight Islamic State.
Trump's comment on Friday was included in a lengthy foreign policy interview published by the newspaper on Saturday and came in response to a question about whether, if elected president, he would halt oil purchases from U.S. allies unless they provided on-the-ground forces against Islamic State.
"The answer is, probably yes," Trump said, according to a transcript.
Trump has said the United States should be reimbursed by the countries it provides protection, even those with vast resources such as Saudi Arabia, a top oil exporter.
"And yet, without us, Saudi Arabia wouldn't exist for very long," Trump told the Times.
Trump also named in the interview retired Major General Gary Harrell, Major General Bert Mizusawa and retired Rear Admiral Charles Kubic as additional foreign policy advisors to the five named earlier this week who were criticized as obscure.

Not in my opinion, these "Allies" have been screwing us going back too the 70's oil embargo... and providing the majority of the 9/11 hijackers. Many of the Twisted royal Family are staunch supporters of Al Queada.
Time to re evaluate our "Allies"

Over the years, the USA has reduced oil imports from the middle east, so it may be time to cut off the Saudis and let them swim in their oil. Saudis are some of the most totalitarian people in the world. Who do you think finances Islamic radicalism. They're Sunnis with thought police and beheadings.

I was born there while my mom and dad were working for Standard Oil (ARAMCO). He got us out of there when we were still little kids, I was six, so we wouldn't need to experience mandatory witnessing of public punishments. The Saudis wouldn't let any of their people into Dhahran because of cultural polution. They hated us and our culture.

Nothing has changed regarding Muslim attitudes towards western (Christian-based) culture. Why are we letting them into the USA?

He's wrong in that we (the US government) has little say in where oil actually comes from. Its a commodity market, and there is not much way, as I understand it, to differentiate between, say, Iraq oil, Yemen oil, Saudi oil, etc. I think regionally is about as good as oil markets define things. Dunno, could be wrong on that, but I don't believe the commodity is that granular

We spend billions a year protecting oil shipments with the fifth fleet. Of those shipments, only 20% go to the US. It is time to look really hard at our spending and our returns. Do you think any other country would spend what we do for such a little return?

Typical Trump knee-jerk protectionism. Would do nothing at all to the Saudi's, just raise oil prices in the United States

What the Saudi's don't sell to us will be sold to the Chinese or North Koreans. Sometimes the best of intentions have the worst of unintended consequences. Trump is just showing how little he knows about foreign policy and trade. Trump is nothing more than a glorified real estate salesman and hustler. Some people need to wake up to that fact.
