It's been law for over 60 years... Interesting Bit of Legislative History - McCarran-Walter Act of 1952

Trump was recently severely criticized for suggesting that the U.S.should limit or temporarily suspend the immigration of certain ethnic groups, nationalities, and even people of certain religions (Muslims).
The criticisms condemned such a suggestion as, among other things, being “Un-American,” dumb, stupid, reckless, dangerous and racist.

Congressmen and Senators swore that they would never allow such legislation, and our (Muslim) president called such a prohibition on immigration 'unconstitutional'.

Well, as Gomer Pyle would say, “Surprise, Surprise!”
It seems thatthe selective immigration ban is already law and has been applied on several occasions.
Known as the McCarran-Walter Act, (the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952) allows for the "Suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by president. Whenever the president finds that the entry of aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, the president may, by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of allaliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or non-immigrants or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”

The act was utilized by Jimmy Carter, no less, in 1979 to keep Iranians out of the United States, but he actually did more. He made all Iranian students already here check in, and then he deported a bunch. Seven thousand were found in violation of their visas, 15,000 Iranians were forced to leave the United States in 1979.

It is of note that the act requires that an applicant for immigration must be of good moral character and "attached to theprinciples of the Constitution.” Since the Quran forbids Muslims to swear allegiance to the U.S.Constitution, technically, all Muslims should be refused immigration.

I think what many on this board really want is a congressional declaration of war against the radicalized Islamic groups. This would afford more latitude to do some of the things that have been proposed here on this forum.

Lets say we do what Trump wants to do, esp. since we now know that there is a precedent, what do we do with the homegrown Muslims that have always lived in the U.S? Do we build interment camps for them? We have a precedent for that too. Where does it stop? How much safer will we be and how do we know that?

I was in an emergency room recently. many of the doctors had names that I could not pronounce nor was English their first language. Some of these doctors are probably Muslim(yeah I profiled). Obviously, they were not trained here. When your loved one is wheeled in and these doctors do what is needed to save their life, for a moment, radical Islam, religion, and all the trouble caused by these small but effective groups has no impact on you. Instead, it is all about another human being saving someone you love.

Be careful what we wish for, we might get it.

I think we need to go after anyone that's gone over to these war zones and prohibit their return back to the US.
Internet communications with all the data mining by the NSA has not stopped anything (that we know of) but we had hard evidence on all of the muzzle radicals and we did nothing. That needs to change to a proactive role.

Snopes tried real hard to debunk that when comparing it to Trump's statement. Despite their best efforts they came up short, saying that The Donald wants to stop ALL Muslim immigration to the US.
I think that's not the way to go - just ban temporarily at the president's discretion the ones who come from Iran, Syria & other war-torn countries, and those already here in the US who return to said places - unless there is properly investigated IRON CLAD documentation that the person(s) have a clean record, including all communications contacts. American-born terrorists like Mateen who travel to such places wouldn't be allowed back in.

And I wish they would slow down the numbers of immigrants, especially the ones who do not meet the already established criteria (jobs, education, etc.) required to come here, instead of ignoring the law like several administrations have been doing.

That's why I said IRON CLAD documentation check on their background. Letting those people overrun Europe without any means to check them all doesn't mean we should do the same. The current president seems to want them all here regardless. But then again, he has a very poor record of following the law. He thinks he is the law unto himself, and the spineless republicans are letting him get away with it.

Nope...I support the McCarron-Walter Act when it's powers are used appropriately. I don't believe blanket condemnation of an entire religion was what the Act's enactors had in mind. That kind of thinking is more in line with Nazi Germany's position wrt those of the Jewish faith, and doesn't align with our Constitution/Bill of Rights.
